I've never used a phospate reactor. I've only been using a bag of chemi-pure in my sump for the past 7 years. I really don't feel the need to send $75 on a phos reactor which is simply a chamber with inlet and outlet. Personally, I could purchase a 3'' PVC pipe, 3/4"pvc pipe, have a bubble plate with holes at the bottom. (inlet outlet). Use aquarium safe silicone to make this a reality.

However, I have a old odyssea protein skimmer which I can no longer use since I lost the collection cup years ago. http://www.google.com/imgres?um=1&hl=en&biw=1024&bih=649&tbm=isch&tbnid=R4atL1LHwWh4BM:&imgrefurl=http://www.reefsanctuary.com/forums/equipment/39945-tuning-odyssea-160-skimmer.html&docid=ClrOXgd8rE9uNM&imgurl=http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff230/Whacked_2007/20g%252520SW/redDSCN1250.jpg&w=479&h=639&ei=KzliUZCPJ5K24AP_-YDgAw&zoom=1&ved=1t:3588,r:72,s:0,i:309&iact=rc&dur=1189&page=4&tbnh=189&tbnw=133&start=68&ndsp=25&tx=14&ty=117

This is what the skimmer body looks like! Water flows in from a tube on the left side. Outlet is a tube inside the skimmer that is at the bottom (water flows from the top side).

Can I add a bag of chemi-pure along with some phosban in the reactor together?

I was planning on using the return to my skimmer/or return pump to force water into the reactor and out the bottom (may be).
Would I be better of just making one out of PVC?
Is it really neccesary to have water going up the media (instead of down)? How much of a difference does this really make? I've always had crystal clear water with just a chemi-pure bag in the sump. While it's not packed tightly there enough turnover that the carbon bag can still be effective
I don't see how gravity fed could be any less effective.
