Is vortec the only pump that has the cord on the outside of tank? I like the look but do not want to spend vortec money.

It's the only one I've ever seen designed that way.

Ditto what spyderturbo said. I've seen a few folks try and DIY the design with varying results but nothing commercially available.

Yes it's the only one. Although its pricey, totally worth the $.

It is the only one like that, and it's a very cool idea... but costs way more than it's worth! IMHO.

There have been a couple of wave maker pumps that are a bit less expensive, but still more than I want to spend for a simple pump.

But now there are a couple Chinese wave maker pumps that are incredibly less expensive (under $100). Sure, there is some risk that's it's too cheap and is just junk. And they are brand new in the market, but I've had mine for 2 months now and it hasn't missed a beat. When they come out with the smaller pump I plan on getting several.

Thanks for all the responses. I know it's probably worth it, but with everything I don't think I can justify the cost just yet.

This hobby is filled with a lot of things that are in the "cool to have but completely unnecessary" category. Controllable powerheads are in that category. :) Personally there are a lot of other pieces of equipment which are much better in terms of bang for your buck as far as tank health if you're just starting than a powerhead that can vary its speed or has its motor on the outside of the tank.

The for sale forums on here are a good place to find them, I bought 2 MP40s on here used for good prices. You need a certain number of posts, and to be a member for a certain amount of time to view them

I agree with everyone else that there is no other pump with the cord on the outside. I will disagree that it is only cool to have as I feel that my corals really like the random flow from my vortechs. If you are patient you can find done really good deals. I have bought 2 mp10s used for a total of 200 dollars. You just have to be patient and wait for good deals

I think tank size is a consideration from a "lost" space basis. My cube is too small for anything but a vortex. My wet side took a crap so it was down for 8 days (I had to return the wet side before they would launch the warranty replacement). I stuck a 900 and 1200 power head in each Bach corner. They could not match the flow of my mp10 running on 50% and ran up the temp a few degrees. My tank looked like my 1991 FOWLR!

Plenty of used one available man. I got a 3 months old mp10wes for $180. I accidentally dropped it, but since it was within warranty, I mailed it in, had the dry side replaced, controller replaced and shipped back to my house within 7 business days. I only paid for shipping.

Also of note, I have a 33 gallon cube and 90 gallon tank. I control everything with my Apex WXW at the push of a button. In this hobby, you got to be somewhat weird and OCD to be successful and that requires making certain sacrifices.

I know people who build a tank using "okay" equipment because they can't justify paying for it. That's fine and dandy, but if you can wait and save money and buy it the following month, it's worth it. Anyone can grow kenya trees or mushrooms in their tank but what the heck are you thinking when you wanted to build a salt water fish tank in the first place. You want nice zoas, sps, etc etc. Same thing with equipment. You don't want something that you'll regret wanting to upgrade later on.

There are lots of things that are overpriced in this hobby, not just Vortech pumps. Frankly, I think they are a pretty remarkable piece of technology, and far better than any other 'power-head' that I have used. That most of the unit remains outside the tank is a further bonus. Also, people suggest they are noisy - not mine!

I love my mp10. Took me a long time to take the plunge but glad I did. The benefit of just cranking up the power and changing modes to stir up stuff behind the rocks during water changes is worth it alone. I've never had a cleaner tank.

I had a Mp-10 and it works great there is no downfall other then the price i have used the WP-40 which is equal to the MP-10/MP-40 in every way i have seen moves just as much water has just as much control! They are coming out w/ a WP-25 nobody knows quite when. All in all after having both wave makers i would say go with the Jebao great product doesnt kill your pocket book (100.00 shipped) and IMO exact same result as my mp-10. If you go with the vortech just paying 150.00 extra for a name.

I bought my 1st one used from here and now I have 3 :/ They're like crack, but different.

The WP40 sounds intriguing for a big tank, but I hear they're huge. Vortech has the market cornered where small in-tank footprints are concerned.

I pulled a Koralia nano and a older Koralia 1 out of my 29 when I put m mp10 in. No need for anything else.

It does seem that Vortech has a patent that makes it difficult for others to copy.
