When you leave it dirty after scraping, and in the water, it will do that. The smell is from anerobic activity due to it being a bacteria that lives in low ox levels. The smell is the bacterias waste- hydrogen sulfide.

Very good thoughts on your behalf syrinx, so how do you suggest that i clean it after every wipe? Do i just run it through some running water and wipe off? Thanks in advance!

I just let it float off of the glass a couple times if I clean a particularly dirty area. I have also taken one out and cleaned it under running water with a toothbrush. Mainly I avoid smelling it-and I have found this to be the most effective way to avoid the odor.

If you think the mag float smells, take a whiff of an algae clip that hasn't been cleaned in a few weeks.
