Hi All,

I've posted this over on TONMO as well, but thought I'd chronical it here since I'm on here more.

I picked up a bimac inklet from a local who's adult had ~80 babies. It's name is Kermit. :) He is living in a 5G growout tank with a lid currently. I lose him in there, so he definately can't move to the big tanks yet!

Day one: Living in the hermit crab shell. Eating live brine. He's ~10 days old at this point, and the size of a pencil eraser...maybe smaller:

~2 weeks later: I started putting small blue legged hermits in the tank. It took his about 3 seconds to grab one...

Today: He is ~1 month old, eating soley hermits. I need to keep trying to transition him to frozen because this is pricey! He's doing well, growing and you can see his eye spots starting to form.

Kermit update! He was out hunting this morning for some hermit crabs (he's eating about 6 a day now...), and returned victorless to his shell. I gave him a piece of krill since I knew he was hungry, and he took it! Not sure if he's eating it or playing with it, but he's been holding it for about an hour.

Also, he inked today. Is that normal for an unstressed octo, or was something stressing him out? At least I think he inked. Maybe he pooped. It was a big BIG black blob, but didn't disperse in the water column.

I'm not exactly sure. The owner of the LFS told me what it was, but I'm horrible with names. It actually looks a lot like yours, now that I think about it. When I saw it, it was just hanging out on the glass and was pretty much a solid gray. At the moment, it's about the size of a cd (maybe a bit larger) when it's fully stretched out.

One thing you may try is shrimp, ghost or small salt water shrimp can be easily obtained and they will take them readily when hungry. Fiddler crabs are also an option. Mine grew large enough to take eating size blue crabs.

Kermit has moved into a breeder box in the temperate tank. He is not thrilled with this development, but his little nursery was getting too hot. I'll put some pics up as soon as he decides to come out of his shell. Literally, lol

How big of a tank do these guys need when they are mature? I have a 30g tank, wondering if its big enough.
When you say cold water, how cold?
Also, what kind of lighting do they prefer?

Thanks woogie

Woogiekids
07/17/2013, 08:52 AM
They get pretty big. A 30G should be OK, but a 50G would be better.

I have his water set at 68 degrees. He was in the growout tank at 72-78 and has grown very slowly. My friend who I got him from (scientist at Scripps Institute) has hers at a higher temp as well, and growing slowly. We are seeing if Kermit grows faster now that he's in the lower temps. Theoretically they are intertidal creatures, so are exposed to higher termperatures, but no one we know has raised them from Inklets to record their growth rate so we don't know if temp is playing a part.

I'd say lower lighting. He seems happier when it's just moon lights or off completely.

Hope that helps!

Alissa

Some new Kermit pics. He's definately growing, albeit slowly. These were taken with my iPhone, so nothing spectacular. :)

He's moved out of the nursery tank (too hot for summer), into my temperate tank in a breeder box, which is better for him temperature-wise but he doesn't seem overly impressed with the downgrade in space. I keep telling him that he's going to get his own tank when he gets big enough not to get lost, but he just stares me down. ;)

What an escape artist. TG he didn't decide to leave the tank entirely. You must have freaked out when you looked for him in his area of the tank and he wasn't there. Did he set up a new cave on the other side? Did you remove the partition?
He sure must be fun to watch. Can you post us a little vid of him?

:) Next time I put a bunch of hermits in the tank for him I'll take a video. Shore crabs he says "eh" about, but hermits?! It's on! lol

He's taken up residence in the cave system that houses the 5 rock shrimp (he was supposed to eat those, lol). I think he hopes they'll just wander into his clutches. He's to lazy to catch those little boogers. They're fast!

whats his current size? he's so small I wonder if one like him be ok in a reef. Granted small fish and inverts would not last.

Woogiekids
12/30/2013, 09:11 AM
He's about the size of a baseball. Most bimacs get a good amount bigger, so we shall see what his final size is. He is 9 months old.

He's a cold water species, so I have a temperate reef. He lives with sea anemones, mussels, starfish etc. There is one blenny in the tank that is living on borrowed time, lol. He will only eat live food, so I'm constantly replenishing his crab supply.

Wow, he is so cool. How does he get the hermits out of their shell? Does he just stick one of his arms in there and yank them out?

Woogiekids
01/28/2014, 09:31 AM
He doesn't eat hermits anymore (too small), but when he did I assume he sucked them right now. :) He eats shore crabs and mussels now days. The shore crabs he grabs and pierces with his beak. It's pretty gross, lol

Don't you worry about him getting injured trying to eat the crab?

Excuse my ignorance because I know nothing about Bimac Inklet, but how does he feed? Do they release some sort of toxin to kill their prey?

Woogiekids
01/30/2014, 01:10 PM
Nah, the worst the crab could do is pinch a tentacle.

Yes, he releases a nerve toxin and then drills in. It's pretty gross, lol

So, Kermit has been acting a little odd lately. He's out of his den 80% of the time, and a bit agitated (running into the side of the tank occasionally). He's still hunting and eating.

I'm wondering if he has outgrown his den that he carved out under the rocks, so I am going to get him a chiclid rock today (large hollow rock) to see if he likes that better. A large beer bottle has also been suggested, but I don't know that he would squeeze down the neck. He's a lazy bum.

Hopefully that's all it is, but he is almost 15 months and could be coming to the end of his life span. Sadness thought. :(

Sugar Magnolia
06/28/2014, 12:24 PM
Yeah, unfortunate that they have such short lifespans. Hopefully a new den will settle him down.

jalisco
07/03/2014, 02:04 PM
Their life span is the only reason I've never acquired one, I get really attached to pets. In all reality the only thing that has kept them from ruling the world is their short life spans.

Woogiekids
07/03/2014, 02:30 PM
He has of course gone back into his old den, and has settled down. But now he's not coming out as much. The folks at Tonmo have posited that perhaps he was looking for a mate. We shall see!

jalisco
07/04/2014, 08:45 AM
To tell if he is looking for a mate all you need to do is draw two eyes on the back of your hand just above your knuckles and then put your hand in his tank and wiggle your fingers.

Was the acting a little strange the start of Senescence. Sure would like an update. I have kept octos for years and was fallowing Kermit on Tonmo. You posted much more here. My next octo will be posted on RC since it seems a lot of Reefers like Octos.

Woogiekids
08/05/2014, 09:46 AM
I think it is. He's not quite himself, doesn't eat as much and doesn't den anymore. He hangs out on the glass all day.

I have an issue posting on TONMO, so more updates here :)

sirrealism
08/05/2014, 10:40 AM
Let me guess. someone said something on Tonmo. If you read the exotic species on tonmo you will see the issues I had because I kept A wonderpus that I resqued from a tank full of large fish, Kept by someone who knew nothing about octos. I think what frustrated me more is I found a way to keep a wonderpus alive and happy until senescence. I dont let it bother me to much but it still kind of frustrated me.
I would think its Senescence. Sorry because you have had him so long. As far as i know Bimacs only live about 14 months but so few get one at such a young age so I think some of the info about them are incorrect. Do you have plans to get another?

sirrealism
08/05/2014, 10:44 AM
I want to make sure you understand I am not mad at Tonmo and still go there and post.

Woogiekids
08/05/2014, 10:44 AM
Ah, that stinks. No, no issues in that department, I just literally have issues posting there. :) My user ID and password keep getting messed up, and the pics don't upload half the time.

I think he has another couple months, most likely. He's still hunting, just not eating as much as before and getting much pickier. He doesn't eat his mussels/clams anymore (maybe he doesn't have the strength?), and he doesn't eat as many crabs as before.

As for another? Maybe...I do want to get some other cold water creatures eventually, that having an octo in the tank wouldn't work. Like fish, lol.

sirrealism
08/05/2014, 11:02 AM
I understand. Is this your only tank? would you consider a warm water one? In a few months the Obraires will be around here and I have friends that are crabbers so they find them quite a bit. I am going to be shipping a few out to tonmo members when they come around. I would love to try A Bimac but they are never around here. I also dont have a cold water set up though I have a couple of chillers and plenty of equipment that I could set up if i could find one. Do they come around up in North Cal often? I know you cant collect them in Cal
Has Kermit slowed down on color changes? I noticed when all of mine where close to senescence they slowed way down on color changes. Plus all the other things like slow eating and staying out all the time. Also mine seems to lose some eye sight

Woogiekids
08/08/2014, 10:54 AM
I've done tropical in the past, but I'm happy with temperate for now. I got bored with the warm water :)

He's been looking a bit pale lately, and sitting sideways (if that makes any sense). Wah.

08/09/2014, 09:35 AM
I agree. I have had a couple of Car Reef octos and a merc. I will never do a merc again unless the tank is in my bedroom. Never see it during the day. I am on the hunt for a Vulgaris. The first octo I ever had was a vulgaris and he was fantastic. So much fun, Big, and so much personality. I kept him in a way to small tank but he did great for 16 months. Tank was a 40" 50-60g and he could easy reach side to side. His color changes were great and so fast. It was also 17 years ago before Tonmo and all the info we have today on them. They have become hard to find.

Kermie passed away this morning, at 18 months. He laid in my hand while he took his last breaths. RIP Kermie, you were amazing and it was such an incredibly interesting and fun 18 months.

Hi, Sorry for your loss, Unfortunatelly octopusses are an amazing adventure that does not last long. 18 month is almost maximum life span for a bimac, means Kermit's life was great :)

Kermie was a beautiful and well loved family member, I can tell. Shucks just finding this thread now, but I enjoyed the whole thing. RIP Kermit! I have an eel named Ellie who is my favorite girl and has her own tank too. I'd love an octo but again, the lifespan :(

You afforded this guy the best possible life a captive octo could have. I feel so bad for your loss. Even though you knew this ahead of time it doesnt make it easy. I had a frilled sea hare that came in as a baby on some algae. He was one of my favorite pets. He would climb into your hand if you had some macro algae for him. I was so bummed when he died. I cant imagine losing a critter as cool as your bimac. On the bright side Catalina gobies next? Maybe a temperate catshark?

Thanks guys. The tank feels so empty now! Although the crabs he left behind, and my one blenny are all excited. I didn't realize how many crabs were in there until they realized that Kermie wasn't stalking them anymore!

I just found this thread today too and I so enjoyed reading it from start to... end. So sorry for your loss. :( I have raised Giant Rainforest Mantises from tiny babies to the end so I know what that's like; even though you know they have a short lifespan, it's still hard to see them go. Thanks for posting such wonderful photos and video and sharing his life with everyone. So cool. :)
