Hi all, I ordered a HOB skimmer today to replace the penguin dual bio wheel filter that I started with. What or is there a process to change over to the skimmer?
I also am in the process of trying to cycle, establish a 10 gal QT. I'm thinking of transfering my HOB bio wheel filter to it. Would that be a good idea or overkill?

as far as the main tank goes, no process, take off the penguin and toss on the skimmer, plug it in and ur good to go.....
and putting the penguin on the the Qt tank is a very good idea. it will help greatly. QT in theory are some sort of biological filtrations, a heater, and a power head for surface agitation, and a piece of PVC for the fish to hide in. a light is optional...but in theory, if you did a water change on your main tank, took that water and filled the 10QT tank, tossed in a heater and threw the penguin on(with out any carbon in the filter, you want just the biowheels on the penguin goin), you would be immediately set up and cud QT a fish that day....

Thanks maddmax. That's a great plan for my QT and makes sense. Are you saying to remove the floss filter pads that contain the carbon? Or, would it be better to cut a lil hole in bottom of floss and empty carbon out?

well removing the carbon is a good idea, just in case you have to dose the tank for anything. the carbon wont be in there to remove the medication.. so removing it and leaving the floss will only help with the beneficial bacteria that is needed for a QT since we generally don't add live rock to these type of treatment tanks....
