The more I look at and use this the more I dislike it. It is limestone right? So not really "real" live rock. I suppose it has some nooks and crannies that "real" live rock has but the pieces I got are quite heavy. I do not think there are many places for nitrifying bacteria to propagate within the rock. It is about 2x as heavy as a similar sized piece of "real" rock. Also comparing the look of it to my "real" live rock I am kind of blase on it. It just isn't as interesting. I may sell off my 50lbs and not use it.
Who here loves/hates Marco?

I have it and love it. You didn't happen to get their base rock did you? Mine is full of nooks and crannies and appears very porous.
Might also be a difference in their "live rock", I got their dry rock.

Yes it was from BRS and is their "dry rock" they sell it in 50lb boxes. Not bad rock, just doesn't look as effective as "real" dry rock (coral).

Marco rock is a company that sells dry natural calcium carbonate based dry rock.
I started my tank with it, seeded it with a few peices of live rock from an established system and its been great. You can't even tell which rock started out dry and which was live now.
You have BRS dry rock, ive heard good things as well.... 2 different companies

Actually I got it from F&S, not BRS. I called it Marco because it looks like that Marco rock.

I have 100% Marco rock in my 50 gallon tank, it's great rock. If you don't have Marco rock, why would you call it that? A statement like "I hate Marco rock" will affect the way others percieve Marco rock and if you have CaribSea South Seas Base Rock and not Marco rock tell it like it is but please don't slam another company and their product when you don't even have their rock.

I thought the rock itself was called "Marco rock" as the type of rock. I didn't realize it was an actual brand. Also I did not slam them I stated my opinion on that type of rock. I doubt many people get their reviews from the title of a post so when they read it they will see it is an opinion piece. If I could edit the title I would.

So it seems like you need to do a lot more research....
You should know what you want and need before making a purchase and then being unhappy about it.

Yeah I should have driven to their warehouse and checked it out before buying it :spin2:. That is way smarter then just buying it for $69 shipped. I wish I had your insight life would be so much simpler! :headwally:

I set up my tank with real dry Marco rock and seeded with a bit of LR from the LFS. Cant tell the difference now. IMO good stuff for the price point.

Sure they do. Most people only read the title and respond without ever reading the initial post or any of the posts in the thread. Happens all the time.

Keep in mind that the suppliers pay as much for a ton of that stuff as we do for 100#

Actually the title just says "Marco rock" and never did I say I hated it.

This stuff if in no way as interesting as your live rock. You're 100% correct. It is BASE ROCK. With that said, give it time to seed with life and you'll have a hard time telling the difference between the two.

Wow. Talk about irresponsible and misleading! Can a mod edit or change the title?
I'm getting ready to set up my first tank and narrowed my choices to Marko and BRS. You weren't even close to getting the name right after several attempts. Bad on you...

I am VERY happy with the rock I got from reefcleaners.org, definitely worth checking out

I got 50lbs of Marco rock directly from the site along with 5lbs of the bonding mortar and I'm really happy with how it turned out. It shipped out pretty quickly too and packed well.
I got a lot of big chunky pieces and not a whole lot of rubble or smaller pieces. With some fiberglass rod and the mortar, I was able to make a pretty decent aquascape; can't wait until the tank cycles and I get some life on the rocks!

The live bacteria in your tank with hollow out the rock. I bought 50 lbs of base rock from a LFS for 1 a # and it looked big and blocky at first, and i hated it. 3 months in and there is huge crevices and caves all over the rocks and they are every shade of coralline possible. Very happy i did not get as much live rock as i wanted after i saw the base rock for the first time

That is the only place i get my rock from. I'll have to get some shelf rock from somewhere else but other than that Reefcleaners.org.

No Marco Rock is the name of a company that sells dry rock.
They sell Florida rock, actually Key Largo Rock.
It is all coral based rock and has lots of holes in it.
I don't know about BRS and F&S, but I do like Marco Rock.
