I have brown diatoms. I keep reading about silica being the main source of food for them. Is there silica in carib sea dry aragonite? I would have figured no, but since i'm havin such a prob (3 weeks so far) I guess there must be silica in it?

Is this a new tank? Diatoms are simply part of the new tank cycle if so. I used Caribsea aragonite and had a pretty big diatom bloom for a couple weeks. Once they consumed all the silica, they died off.

Are you using tap water? Big source for silica.
If not, then these diatoms will slowly die off as the tank matures.

hi and thanks
I have always used rodi tds = 0, phosphates (api) read 0 and have all along, nitrates are a little high at around 5 to 10 ppm, but they're not THAT high. Just bumming me out a little. I blow them off daily with baster, aquamaxx hob helps some? I guess i'll just have to wait it out. no biggie but it has been 3 weeks. I feed light .... honestly.
but thanks again for the reply's
