I need advice on an external protein skimmer for a 500 gallon FOWLR set up. No room in sump or underneath the stand. Im on a budget so Im looking for maybe running 2 smaller skimmers. Can anyone recommend the best skimmer for the $$$.

Much appreciated.

Check for used skimmers in the classifieds. I like Deltec a lot.

It's going to be tough to find a good external for a 5 hundo but not impossible. What's your budget? I can recommend a few quality units if I know what your working with $ wise.

I picked up a red sea 1800 off ebay to start. I am planning on adding a second skimmer once get started. Budget is around $300

Two skimmers won't work. One skimmer will stay idle and hinder the better unit. For 300 you can get a decent (good actually) internal skimmer but few external units worth using. Are you definitely going with an external unit? If you change your mind look at aquamaxx, sea side aquatics, jns, or even eshopps. What size tank do you have? If you like I can post a link to the article about two skimmers being a bad idea.

Ok , this makes no sense too me, you have a 500 gallon tank and you are looking at cheap skimmers? skimming is the "heartbeat" of ANY system and you want to cheap out on this ? what were you running before ?
