Will be starting a new stand build for my 4' 75G next week. What have people found is the best stand height to view their tank best? Mine currently is a bit short and most people have to bend down a bit to see into it at a decent angle. Here is an old pic of my current stand not long after I got it for free:

(I'm rebuilding it because the guy who built it had a bunch of center supports so there it no room at all underneath.)

I built my 75g stand at 35'' tall. Seems just right, no bending unless you really want to get up close.

How do you view your tank? From the couch, dining table, standing? I would consider that before determining height.

I probably want to build it for best viewing when standing

I built my stand 40" I believe and it is perfect, I love it. Here is a link: http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2129915

I stood up, and lined my eye level with the top of where my water level would be.

Being that im just over 6', anyone else has the perfect viewing angle when they comover.

Oh i have a 4' 55g, 17-19" tall i dont remember

I like it so you're just barely looking down at most of the tank while standing in front of it. The coral seem to look a little better from a top down perspective, but bending over is a pain. I think mine have been somewhere in the neighborhood of 35'ish inches. Basically counter height is good.

im 6'8" tall and my wife is 5'3"
so my perfect viewing height would make her look at the wood work on the stand. (if that makes since)

but my current 240 has a stand that is shorter then 30" tall (i dont know why) so im looking at the canopy wood work while she is looking at the top 1/3 of the tank.

So thats a bad question.

Secondly, what corals do you have/want. if SPS then your tank will be full especially at the top.
if LPS and sand dwellers then you might want a taller stand to view those.

there are lots things to consider.

as mentioned are you going to be viewing from a sitting position (which would make the height good for most people) or standing (where person height is a key factor)

i would rather my tank be too high for most but perfect for me because i have to view it every day haha

Thanks all for the suggestions. I like the idea of putting direct eye level with the top of the water line. Being that I'm 6'3" I will probably put it slightly lower than that. I'll be building it next week so look for my build thread.

FWIW I am just finishing a build. I put the top rim of the tank at the same height as my armpit so I could get my arm in there without standing on something. It's a standard 75G on a 32" stand and I am about 6'.

This is a good idea, mine is JUUUUST a little tall for me to reach in comfortably, but thats why i have a little footstool stuffed away in the corner that i grab whenever im reaching over the tank to toy with my skimmer or re-arrange something in the tank

My tank is 21" tall, and i put it on a 36+" (3ft) stand. So being 6' it ended up maybe 1" above armpit level, but perfect viewing angle for my wife, shes only a few inches taller than the hole thing :)

*edit* Also if you have small children, the footstool will ALWAYS be out and in the way anyway, so that they can get up and look in. My daughter (just turned one) absolutely loves the tank.

We play the pointing game, and she can point out mommy, daddy, puppy, and kitty like 50% of the time, but she gets fishy 100% of the time!

My 75 is right at 40" to the bottom of the tank putting the top of the trim right at 61.5"

I'm 6'1" and find the view perfect. I also built the stand 24" deep to accommodate a 40 breeder. I used Marino420td's stand as a template and adjusted for my tank.

I think I have a pic of the tank on the stand before I set everything up, I'll look and post one if I can find it.

My stand is 40 inches tall and I think it is the perfect height. I don't have to bend over to look at my tank and it doesn't look ridiculously tall.

Also, having the stand at 40 inches gives me plenty of room to work underneath the tank.
