Admittedly it's not the most optimal set up, but I wanted to try it before doing a different set up on the fuge.

Also I read on yours you want to do a Mandarin and I would like one too. I'm 99% sure some sort of bigger HOB or even an external set up will probably need to happen. Although I know people who have trained them to take frozen mysis

I would not do a mandarin in this tank. It will be impossible to produce enough pods even with a fuge to supply enough pods for a mandarin. Mandarins must eat constantly throughout the day so even if you have a mandarin trained to eat frozen food...unless you are constantly feeding it all day long, it will starve to death. If you get one, you will have to be replenishing the pod population constantly which will get mega-expensive. My brother-in-law has one in a 30g tank and he has a nice-sized fuge also. The mandarin does eat frozen, and he still has to supplement pods in his tank. Usually about three times per month. I think he is spending close to $40/month just supplementing pods so the mandarin doesn't starve. You can better believe that this will be even more expensive in a smaller tank with a smaller fuge. So if you get a mandarin, be prepared to spend alot of money buying pods to feed the mandarin. There is a reason these fish are suggested for larger tanks and are listed as expert-level fish. People even sometimes have trouble keeping them fed in larger systems.

I believe it. I had one in a 55. I want one but I don't actually plan on getting it for the reasons you listed.

There have been people who have successfully cared for a mandarin in tanks as small as a 10 gallon.

I dont know if I will attempt it, but there aren't any fish that really appeal to me that aren't already in tanks at my house. Each tank is different, so I won't do duplicate fish.

And those people either have to supplement the pod population by buying pods or they have a way to grow pods on their own...and I am not talking a small fuge. They either have a very large fuge connected to the nano tank or they have a separate system set up dedicated to breeding pods so that they can supplement pods. I would say to keep a mandarin healthy that they need to eat about 500 pods or so per week. This will be less if they accept frozen but even then they still need a very high pod population because they eat ALL day long. Why do they have to eat all day? Because they don't have true stomachs like other fish. Their digestive system is more like that of a seahorse or pipefish where they cannot store food to be digested throughout the day. They must eat constantly or they will starve. So you will need a very large pod population to keep them. Supplementing pods buy purchaing them will get hugely expensive very fast. You can definitely do that if you are willing to pay alot of money but is the fish really worth that much money to you? I do think you will definitely have to supplement your pods weekly in a 16g tank. A package of live pods of about 300 pods costs about $12. That is over $48 per month which is $576 per year. You can also set up a dedicated system to raise pods but this can get expensive in it's own right and takes quite a bit of time and effort. If you are willing to put the money and time into raising pods to supplement your tank then good for you. If you are not willing to do either of these, then a mandatin should not be on your wish list for this tank. Otherwise, f you really want a mandarin, I suggest setting up another much larger aquarium with a large sump and fuge.

I used a Finnex HOB as a fuge, from my experience in the past with all-in-one systems, there is usually a build up that happens that would be a nuisance to clean every 2 to 3 weeks. most compartments on theses systems are 2 to 2.5 inches and 12 to 14 inches deep and it's going to be difficult to get proper water flow so the build up happens.

I suggest the Turkey Baster method every week to get the build up out otherwise when the spike hits, it's pretty extreme.

I've kept a dragonet in my 24 Pod for about 6 years before giving it away, it did fine but I did buy a pod pack to kick start the culture. It can work but you need to keep aware of your pod colony. If you're building a reef system, I'm going to assume you don't have a problem with the misc. costs that come with it.

I would rec. that you think about a HOB fuge for culturing and colonizing as well as being able to add some volume of water to your system.

Good Luck!

FYI, if you click the "IMG" on photobucket, it automatically copies the direct link and pastes the pic to your posts without people linking to another page. The paste would be 2 lines that you would see.

I've actually been housing one for about two months now and he is fatter than when I got him and picking on the rock religiously. He now also eats mysis and some other critters in the tank such as worms and amphipods along with copepods which are well seeded as the rock is out of my old reef system and I have a ten gallon fuge running that is a separate tank but I do throw some rock in my display weekly.

The Innovative Marine skimmer designed for the Nuvo 16 worked well for me, however, I only used it for 2 weeks before selling it (Since my Nuvo is nothing more than a QT tank now).

Issue I had with it was a lot of microbubbles.

Do you think the micro bubbles were just because it wasn't broken in? I hear such mixed reviews on the IM skimmers.

I don't know, to be honest, though, I doubt they would've completely gone away.

It was pulling some slime after a few days, once I get the level dialed in correctly.

I got it for free, so, I definitely liked the result, but, don't know if I would spend $100 on it.

To help solve the microbubbles, I wedged a sponge by the overflow of the 2nd baffle going into where the pump was ... it helped some, though didn't solve it.

I liking you punk rocker combo frag. Yeah, I should hold off on tank upgrade and grow out my corals. I do need a lighting upgrade, my diy/8 watt setup is shotty looking. Was thinking about a kessil A150 Ocean Blue or maybe wait for that new maxspect cannon with built in controller. Any thoughts? Im trying to stay around that 200 range.

terrypercula

My red hornets seem to be doing well since the frag. I will place them on my archway and get some updated pictures soon. The magicians just went on earlier today. A lot has changed since my last FTS lots of LPS has been sold a couple new chalices added a few new pieces of SPS as well.

Well it's been a while since an update reason being my friend's tank is battling through an algae battle. I've been housitting his corals until his tank is under control. My plan is after his tank his set again I'll finally move the frag rack out of my tank because it's ugly and in the way and move it into my moms 10 gallon after I get a decent light set up on there. Plans for future looking into an mp10 after literally 2 years of opting against one. Then might do one clean light fixture of the nuvo. An option I've thought of was getting a nice light for me(suggestions?) And moving the current lighting to my moms tank. As always thanks for viewing and responses and happy reefing!

jelli
09/26/2013, 05:15 PM
Sounds like a good excuse to upgrade your lighting to me. I'm researching options as well. Gonna make a purchase when the next big sales go on. Now that the radion gen 2 is around $500 its the best buy considering price per watt and controllability, I think. Especially if your gonna get an MP10. But thats if you have no budget. The AI Hydra is my next choice for a little cheaper @ 95 watts, but you have to buy the $80 controller separately. Then Kessil's, nice but no control means crappy timers. Theres a new Maxspect light coming out in comparison to Kessil's but with a controller for $200. Looks a lil bulkier but might be another option. Anyways, let me know what your thoughts are on lights.

terrypercula
09/26/2013, 06:44 PM
I had a gen 2 radion before. It's an incredible light. But trust me it's over kill, I'd have to have it at like 20% or 2 feet over the water ha

Not sure. Kessil seems like a very nice fixture, it's a very clean looking fixture. So that would be nice. Not sure of the spread on the fixture though. It may only be 16 gallons but it's still 24 inches long. I could DIY something but certainly not my first choice. AI lights are nice but I'm not fond of their controllers. I could do another Radion but I don't plan on upgrading this tank any time soon and that would just be absolute over kill. Not big on the Razor fixtures in general. I'm also in no rush so who knows what else could be coming out. As of now I'm leaning Kessil.

It's hard to tell in that picture but believe it or not the tank I would say is fully stocks. I have my two perculas, one starry blenny and my green Mandarin(fat and happy) plus my 2 blood shrimp and the rest of my CUC. If I did anything else it would probably be a small goby/shrimp combo. I have to agree even in person the tank gives off a big feel.

Very cool. Obviously, your Mandarin is eating frozen? :)

terrypercula
10/07/2013, 02:00 PM
Yes she eats frozen mysis, amphipods(very violent because she bites them in half first lol) also small white and small red worms that I've seen in the tank as well in addition to other various pods. She actually eat a lot various critters too. I do want to add some things to my CUC though. Any suggestions? I tend to stay away from crabs(don't tryst them)

Ok question for my stand. I'll be transferring my tank from it's location to a different location on a stand. My question is I plan on a controller soon so should I have my controller on the outside like a true reef geek or keep it inside the stand for a clean look? Same question goes for my MP10 controller.

Devaji108
10/16/2013, 10:00 PM
I would go inside the stand. as ur controller will most likely have an app for your smart phone so u can control it with out touching it. :)

on a side note I have really been thinking about this set up...just kinda wish it was just a bit bigger with out going to the cubes, as i love length more the boxes.

I wish the 30 and 38 were longer less tall. I like the 16 at 24" because if you pushed it to say 30" there would be no depth in the tank. I like the dimensions on the 24 gallon though.

I was thinking my phone could control it regardless. The idea of it on the outside wasn't really for functionality purposes more so I've seen it done and the nerd in me thought it was cool lol

Love the goby. One of my must haves for my tank. How hard are they to care for?

terrypercula
11/11/2013, 08:58 AM
Mine eats frozen and prepared foods along with live foods so outside of that she's very easy to care for. Very active too. Long term I don't know if she could be in here full size I'd imagine her demand for food will grow greatly as she gets bigger. If you read the beginning of my thread there was a lot of debate if keeping one in a tank this small would be possible. I've had her for a few months now and she's never been skinny , in fact she's quite plump so I'd say given the circumstances one can be kept in smaller aquariums.

Just to add to the mandarin debate, we have one in our BC 29 and it is full grown. One of my first steps when starting a tank as soon as the cycle is complete is to add pods a few weeks before adding fish. Gives them a chance to populate. But we also made sure the mandarin was saying prepared foods at the store first.

Mine is far from full grown but as stated she is fat and healthy. I'll kind of make the judgement as she gets bigger. If I notice when she's bigger she loses a little weight or even gets uncomfortable I'll move here to my friends tank. He breeds them and he said he'll take her.

The Innovative Marine skimmer designed for the Nuvo 16 worked well for me, however, I only used it for 2 weeks before selling it (Since my Nuvo is nothing more than a QT tank now).

Issue I had with it was a lot of microbubbles.

+1 microbubbles are horrendous I only leave it on a timer when the lights are off.

That's what I heard about them. I've read into them, with some fiddling I've read you can cut the bubbles out and actually pull some good skim.

are you using the BRS reactors on the Nuvo 16? I was looking at them, and they are dirt cheap! Two reactors with a pump for $90. Do they work well sitting behind the tank, or do they have to modded in some way? Thanks.

Mine is just behind it. It works great.

awesome. is there just a pump that you put in the rear chamber? then the water goes into the reactors, and a return line back into the rear of the tank?

also, how much space would i need to get the until to fit between my wall and tank?

sorry for all the questions, i'm just so curious as to how this all works. thanks.

terrypercula
12/08/2013, 03:15 PM
That's exactly how it works. And there's a valve to adjust the pressure to the media to fine tune it the right spot. I'm confused by the second question. Do you mean the space between tank and the wall in the back to fit the reactor? If aobthe reactor is like 4-5 deep. You could tuck it in a stand though if you had too.

i'm just asking that if i were to put the reactors behind my tank (not in the rear chamber - literally behind it), how far from the wall would the back of my tank have to be in order to fit the reactor back there?

terrypercula
12/08/2013, 03:53 PM
Probably 6 inches to give yourself space for maintenance and such. That's my guess you could probably get by with less though.

12/17/2013, 08:14 PM
Just a quick update. I'm very satisfied with the recent equipment upgrades. The Tunze ATO is fantastic and running Kalk in my resivoir has made dosing my daily routine basically nothing. The dual reactor from BRS is great the Cobalt MJ1200 that is powering it is dead silent. I'm still I'm love with the MP10 and my thoughts on my current lighting haven't really changed. Clowns are mating and that has made them real aggressive and they host my RBTA now which is really cool because that means they're leaving my ioen brain alone a little more allowing it to fatten up and hopefully recover. All and all I still love the Nuvo tanks I've still had zero issues with it.

Just realised I never responded to this! Sorry! It was a 57 gallon rimless by deep blue. The center overflow worked fine but SUCKS for aquascaping. And the Nuvobstock lights are great. I've said it before and I'll say it again they're under rated because they're only 8 watts. You should compare the LED's brightness to watts like you should say how much an elephant weighs with rainbows. It's meaningless. I like LPS a lot but it's tough inna smaller tank because they're so aggressive at least euphyllia is.

I'm going to be upgrading to a 90 gallon but I don't want this tank to be pushed away. So in order to do that I want something different in here. My girlfriend wants dwarf seahorses. Anyone have any other suggestions. I may just use it as a frag tank.

I say an off branch of your 90. Take all the colony corals that would be in your 90 and just break pieces off and place it in the 16!

I'm basically doing the reverse of this! Haha I want to keep the nuvo either way because I love the tank. Only way my girlfriend will let me keep it though is if I have seahorses lol

On a side note the lighting for now will be T5's but I'm thinking reef breeders over it in the long run.

Agh well there's so much you can do with the tanks! Haha. And sea horses.. Hmm. How do you feel about that? Haha.

Honestly I'm on the ball of selling my Reefbreeders and picking up a 4 Bulb 24" T5 fixture for my nuvo. Not sold on LEDS.

A few dwarf seahorses wouldn't hurt. I have much research to do the because they sound like they can be a royal PITA. Yea I mean LED's can be finniky. Some people have roaring success and others don't which is why people like MH and T5's, you know what you're going to get. I've had T5's in the past and still do on a frag tank but the color I get out of my LED's by far surpasses anything I've ever gotten out of T5's. The nicer fixtures have LED's built in. I thought of doing that too. Maybe running T5's with a couple reefbrite fixtures.

I heard the same. But it could be cool! Excuse to keep the tank and try something new. Only thing it'll hurt is your wallet. Just a tad though.

Yes it's guaranteed success pretty much with T5's. And you can get amazing color. But it's not your led color that really makes your corals pop. Idk. Really thinking about doing that though.

Yea captive breed dwarfs aren't cheap. Pretty cool though plus a local guy breeds seahorses so I'm sure he has plenty of advise in how to keep them healthy.

So the water in ATO tank has the Kalk stirred into it before you put in in the holding tank, do you have to stir it once its in the tank to keep the powder dissolved? Is the small container surrounding the pump protecting from not getting the Kalk power into the water that is being pulled into the tank?

Yes I stir the water up and add it to the resivoir. That's what the container is for and I don't stir once it's in there.

It's not painted. The back is actually a black vinyl. Razor out the section and pull until it's off. Very simple to do. I use the innovative marine magna fuge light on an opposite light schedule of my display lights to help balance any minor PH swings. My only hangup now is debating between the customcaddy by auquagadget and the fuge basket by intank. I think the customcaddy has adjustable shelving and is cheaper but the intank is slightly bigger width wise and depth wise.

I don't think you can go wrong either way. As long as it fits both should work just fine. My Chaeto has grown A LOT with that light. I'm going to use it on my refugium for my 90 gallon as well. I'm impressed.

Looking forward to the results of your experiment. I hope I didn't just waste money on lights. There's a weird taste in my mouth, sort of tastes like my words... because I'm eating them lol.
I'll say it's been a surprising twist. My corals and SPS(bird of paradise, sestosa, monti caps, green slimer) have been doing well except my red digi. Didn't see that coming ha the polyp extension on the digi has been horrible and this whole time I thought a digi could grow in a toilet with an incandescent bulb. The only other thing not doing well is my anenome.

Other things have changed too, weird things. The coloration on my starry blemny has changed drastically. My electric flame scallop has stopped lighting up as much and my dragonette is flashing different colors. Very odd things going on since removal of my strip light.

not good news for me... Even though I do have three. Once my fuge is setup and return pump upgraded all my equipment will basically be done. From there I can focus all my money on frags. On a side note, I have seen so many people saying there is no need for a skimmer on a 16 gallon, just do water changes. Well I was just doing water changes but since I added my skimmer I have been getting half a cup full of green water every day. All of which would be in my tank. The algae the accumulates on the front glass has slowed down and the algae that grew on my back wall has stopped altogether. Micro bubbles still suck on day 12 but it is doing work

Yea skimmer is not necessary on smaller tanks...still doesn't hurt to have though. Mine pulls out good gunk every few days. Most of my corals gave experienced no difference. But red digi, which was growing like a weed, has less polyp extension and anemone is not feeling it. All in all I still say you could get by but definitely supplemental lighting was s good choice.

Usually anemones bubble more under brite lights. The lack of light is making it stretch more to get more. But it still looks pretty good.
I have a 12 gallon nano cube I'm playing with now but am looking at something new to put some good money into to use for high end zoos or maybe some sps. The nuvo is really getting my attention. So far the only other I'm looking at is a 24x 20x 9"high all in one frag tank. I liked the idea of top down viewing. I'll be following to see how ur light experiment goes. Great thread!

The Nuvo tanks are fantastic but if you get one you can get them without the lights for $250 and put that $100 you save into another light system. Not really it's a pretty decent skimmer. You might have to take the foam guard off of the inlet tube at first but once it's soaked it'll fit on and be a bit tight. Youl have to fiddle with it to get it tuned in but that's like any skimmer. I have mine skimming pretty wet(deep in the water column). All in all I'm pleased still.

In your search for other lights what were you thoughts? I can decide which would give an even spread over the tank. AI Hydra, Maxspect Razor, or 2 AI Nanos. I currently have the same lighting as you but sometimes wonder if the sps would grow better under the under fixtures.

I thought about a couple Kessils or a reef breeders fixture. I'm sure the hydra would be a great choice, maybe a little over kill but hey that's why it's dimmable ;)

I had a cleaner shrimp in my Nuvo 16 and had to get rid of him.

He kept stealing food from my anemones and coral >.<

I'm not too worried about that. I don't really feed corals and my anenome once a week.

24 inch Skyye single strip in black actinic. I got it at an LFS but marine depot has them. I think they're $100 or so. Pretty powerful 120 lumens per watt, 1 watt leds but it non dimming and no on off switch so you'll need a timer or just plug it in and out when you want.

Ha I didn't expect Nevada to be a big "sports state." You guys should get a football team. The Las Vegas strip :D

Lmao people just root for everyone. My restaurant was packed, think we had 1 table that wasn't reserved. 256 seats, $45 per person per hour plus tax and gratuity lol. But were on the strip so we have a bunch of out of Towners.

But we're pretty big in sports

I mean it's not bad for a frag tank lol
I did some thin sand on the bottom and I'll put some rock rubble in the bottom to hold some bacteria. I placed this AIO filter/circulation pump thing on the back and my lighting might be changed to something else down the line but for now this is what it is. As you can see my eggcrate PVC frag rack is on the bottom plus I'll put my magnetic one higher for some SPS pieces. All in all it's better than the one I'm working out of now

Great job with your Nuvo 16; what kind/size of heater(s) are you using?

Eheim 50 watt. They're great heaters but it doesn't really fit ha I'd suggest a cobalt neo thermdue to it's compact size.

Dave got the a360we and it was a bust. The shimmer was very cool but with my aquascape there was a ton of shadowing and the light was not as bright on the edges of the tank as I hoped. I am going to try a Hydra next, maybe I'll find an upgrade that works.

A 360 should have had enough siread for a 24" length tank. His high off the surface was it?

I had it at 6inches and then moved it to 8 inches and still didn't get it right. Maybe I'm used to the current set up but it did not make the colors pop like i thought.

I'm a little surprised I've seen a couple tanks lit by kessils looking great.

Was it one unit or 2? If I had 2 it would have been awesome but at 400 a pop that to rich for a 16 gal. At least I sold it in a few hours.
