You will need an alkalinity test kit along with calcium and magnesium, since corals consume carbonate alkalinity for their skeletons to make calcium carbonate.

I have had good results with Salifert kits in general. The IO kits have been okay, too. The API calcium and alkalinity kits are reasonable, too.

It depends on what corals you're wanting to keep. If you're just keeping softies, you don't really need to worry much about calcium. I like Salifret test kits as well. Hanna checkers for phosphates and alk are great.

I use salifert for alk, clacium, and magnesium. Api or slaifert for ammonia and nitrate . A colorimeter for PO4.

I've used API for Calcium and it worked reasonably well, but I might buy a Salifert kit when I need a new kit.
