Can't say much about IO, but when red sea recently raised the price of their blue bucket from $55/bucket to $65/bucket I wasn't too thrilled about it either.

Get basic IO mix and dose DYI 2 part to compensate for low Ca/Alk/Mg.
Still, I agree that seeing salt prices going up has not been fun.

Dug up my first order of Reef Crystals from DFS back in 2007. It's like looking at a picture of a gas pump price sign from 1999:

CD-16882 Aquarium Systems Synthetic Sea Salt Reef Crystals 160 gallon mix

Quantity: 2
Price: $31.99
Total: $63.98

I just picked up a 200gal box of regular IO from drsfostersmith while they are still on sale at $39. Added a couple other thing i wanted to get anyway to get the free shipping too.

That box is going to last me a very very long time! Or better yet I'll have to start a bigger tank so I can use all this salt ;-)

I guess I can't complain because I use Aquavitro Salinity so I'm use to paying $75 for a 225g salt bucket. But wow, marine depot has RC for $78 a box? What a freaking rip-off. I really hope nobody is bending over and paying that much for a 200g box of RC. I'd really like to know why I can get almost 2 boxes of RC for drsfosterandsmith or from my LFS for the price of 1 box on Marine Depot. LFS around here offer 200g boxes all the time on sale for $42 a box.

where do you buy Aquavitro Salinity salt

I can get close the to the Instant Ocean 200 gallon box $39.99 DFS sales price locally, but man, UPS delivers those boxes to my door and they are heavy. Much easier than having to drive to the LFS, pay the money, lug it into the car, drive it home, then lug it out of the car. I always buy enough for the free shipping, but I have a 465 gallon and a 100 gallon reef, so I go through the stuff fairly quickly.

My lfs sells the IO salt 200 gallon box for 39.99 and the reef crystals for 49.99. Thats the cheapest I can find it most places around me other than that one lfs they are at least 10.00$ more a piece .

:fish1: The price of NSW is going up to. Seems like every time I go out in the boat to collect water and catch a few fish It cost more. :fish1:

I've been buying IO Reef Crystals from Dr. F&S for several years now. 200 gallon box cost me $47.99 September 2011. Just bought another one last week, cost me $48.99. That's a $1 or 2.1% rise in almost 2 years, or 1% a year. That's better then the inflation rate or cost of living increase. I can't complain.

That's even better than the rise in the cost of gas, if I were to gas up a boat to get NSW :D

where do you buy Aquavitro Salinity salt

Your LFS. You'll have to ask them to order it. From my understanding, which could be way off, is they don't distribute Salinity to online retailers, but only to LFS. Or something like that. I buy mine 3 buckets at a time so my LFS gives me a price break on it so it costs me $75 a bucket. The beauty of the salt is all 225g come out to .026 salinity which means each one gallon is .026. It's super concentrated, I will never use another salt again after switching to this.

I wait for it to go on sale at DFS because by LFS wants $75 a box for IORC and $150 for Aquavitro. Those of you that can get Salinity for $70 are lucky.

from what I remember there was a time where I got from Marine Depot the CR box of 200g for $40

Just for the salinity, the argument doesn't work well.
RC box gives you 180g at 1.026 salinity for $50, or $0.277/gal.
AV salt - 225g at 1.026 salinity for $75, or $0.333/g.

My argument was never for price? Or maybe you're just trolling? If that were the case I'd go with something cheaper than RC, so I'm not really sure what you mean by "the argument doesn't work well" I never said there was an argument? All I stated was each gallon comes out to .026 RC does not. At a 200g box it takes as you said, only 180g comes out to .026 not all 200g do. If you want all 200g to come out to .026 you have to buy more. I'm not even sure its 180g that come out to .026 it could be less but I'm not sure. There's no half cups in salinity or odd measuring so its convenient. 1g = .026 RC does not.

No, not trolling at all. Sorry, I thought this thread was about the price. My bad.

I also thought that you can get lower salinity with AV when you mix less per gallon of water. Likewise, you can get higher salinity with RC when you mix more. So it all really comes down to the price of a gallon of mixed salt water at 1.026 salinity.
I guess I'm not quite following your logic. Please prove me wrong.

i think the point is rc "says" it equals a certain amount of gallons at 026 and it does not.
av "says" it equals a certain amount of gallons at 026 and it does.

The thread is about price, but it's not about which Salt is the cheapest to buy at .026 salinity. It was about the general rise in a box of salt. Particularly in IO and RC. I made a comment about the ease of use in AV being that each gallon comes out to .026 really it should have been left at that. There was never a comparison between salts at a measured salinity, that was you. If someone wants to buy the cheapest salt possible at a measured salinity it wouldn't be RC either. The real concern should be why one big company charges $30 more for the same exact box of salt that another company charges significantly less for?

RC says right on the label: 200g @ 1.021. So sure enough it'll make fewer gallons @ 1.026. 180 gallons to be exact.

If I had to bet, I'd say that DFS charges less for this salt to bring in customers in the hopes that they will buy other stuff. I'd be surprised if they break even selling it at that price. It's good for me though, as I still have a relatively cheap and reliable source of salt mix.

This is indeed where it should have been left. However, you've made a comment about the ease of use and the cost of one salt vs the other. The comment was incorrect and potentially misleading for those who will be reading this looking for an advice. So I felt compelled to make the correction by showing the "grocery store's price/lb label" which is fair.

If this is the case then I better stock up. The LFS currently have a special on ESV 200g for $40!
