I was told this is a Tahiti Maxima...how do you tell the difference in grades?

Certainly a Maxima. Looks like one of the ultra Tahiti Maximas. There is no 'grading' system for clams like there is, for example, with diamonds. IMO just a marketing term, hyperbole. Vendors will charge more for better looking, or rarer clams. Ultra, super, ultra super, mega ultra super select, etc. A really nice, good sized, electric blue Maxima is in the $150 - $250 range.

I got it for 180 in Portland, LFS wanted 250 initially.

nice Tahitian maxima got one thats very similar, make sure you give it crazy amounts of light
