Hey all. I have been keeping my sharks in my 600 gallon fowlr and i am now looking into building them a shark lagoon. I have heard of people using above ground pools with pond liners, but i do not want to use the soft side ones because this will be in my basement i i do not want to risk having all the water on the floor.my question is will the metal in the metal sided pool mess with the sharks? And here is a picture of my current tank/Users/lemakdavid/Desktop/IMG_0298.JPG

pics not working your linking to your local folder on your computer. You need to upload to an online hose than paste the direct link in the photo insert option.

Beautiful blind shark. Which species?
Just a thought but don't even the metal sided pools, which a friend of mine has told me are worth nothing as scrap anymore, which leads me to believe they contain far less actual metal than they used to (Aluminum i believe it was?), but arent they just a very thin soft liner under that thin metal-ish skin? In essence the same as the Index pools but with a thin metal-ish skin hiding the pool liner. Just my thoughts.
For a long term investment i would use wood, cement, FRP, thick EPDM Pond liners or any combination of them. I would love to do another lagoon in elaborate masonry but it becomes very costly and needs to be covered in marine epoxy or liquid fiberglass anyway. Good luck and do it up!

Just answered your PM, but here is an example. When I re-did my 5,000 - I rerouted the life support to this above ground pool for several weeks and moved all the livestock to it as a holding. No issues at all. My only advice is take your time setting it up and make sure you get enough sand under the liner to keep it level. Also be aware there will be a little sand creeping out from under it after the weight of the water pushes around a little.

Before filling it.

Wow. Thats not what I was picturing at all! Thats a very snazzy above ground setup! It looks well built and sturdy.
If using that long term would it be advisable to lay an EPDM liner on top of the pool liner?

Nice setup. I would love for when I make or setup my lagoon in the future to have a viewing window. Top Down only really bugs me. Wonder if you could add an acrylic window to a pool like that ? Maybe a few layers built up of like 1/2" then sealed and bolted to the pool wall??? Unless those side are not very sturdy

I have seen acrylic windows cut into them. Sorry for the poor pic quality. It was after about 34 hours straight of a bull shark transport.

So cool. Wish I had an indoor spot big enough to house something like this. Shark/ ray lagoon sounds so badass.

Zoodiver,

Do you always use the resin pools? That also looks like an 8 or 10 ft pool. What brand are you using. Most commonly I've seen the fiberglass ones fron dolphin, etc... But have considered aluminum as an alternative. I've been told the resin pools use regular steel hardware and have many steel parts that rust. Love to know your experience. .

First pool is an Intex. I just used it as a short term holding while we gutted the main display and rebuilt it. I've had a lot of luck with them, and will probably keep using them for quick set ups. One of my collectors also uses them for holding pools with out any issues outdoors in the Keys. I'll try and remember to snap a pic of it next time I'm down.
I have used a lot of the fiberglass pools in the past (Red-E-Wald). I love them for more long term installs. They are very hardly pools that can take some abuse. They are also a lot easier to plumb into.

The pool with the window is actually Josh's (that's him standing on the left side). I took it when I was up there a few years ago. He had white tip reefs, black tip reefs, a lemon pup and it seems like one other species - but it's slipping my mind right now (sharpnose maybe???).

I highly suggest black tip reef (the Pacific shark) over a local black tip. Atlantic black tips get bigger, are more active and more prone to death in a 'small' pool. They need lots of open space. Most often then start rubbing their rostrums on the edge which opens them up to both navigation issues and secondary infection.
Black tip reefs are also much cheaper and hardier as pups when getting them acclimated to tank life.

I shark fish a lot catch and release. I know what you mean by getting big. The biggest black tip I caught was 7'9" But I do catch more then enough small 12" black tip, bonnet head, great hammer head pups and bull shark pups. But out of all of them the bonnet head would be the only one I would put in a pond. I have caught some big bull sharks, tigers, hammers and even a 11' nurse shark from the beach and in the bays. Thats why I cant believe that the nurse sharks are for sale on site.

There is a big difference between the Atlantic black tip that you catch and the black tip reef shark.
Also, you should not see a nurse shark for sale under 54 inches. I believe it is illegal and FL just nailed several people for it.
Bonnetheads do stay smaller but I would argue that they require more experience and expertise to keep.

If your doing this in the basement why not choose a corner and build a mason block wall to box a corner it would save on block to use a corner you could either buy just a genuine below ground vynal pool liner or spray epoxy line it tbh I think the expense will be close both ways but with a hammer drill and rods you could reinforce the block (drill into floor) fill block with concrete ... You could even frame a spot for a lexan window if you wanted block is pretty versatil and there are many options for liners you could fill the one corner to get a radius sharks don't care for squares too much .... Good luck

Just as an FYI (not that you said you planned on it) - To collect sharks alive down here in FL, it requires a permit from the state (SAL - Special Activities Lic.). They want to know everything about you, what you are doing with them and then will allow you to collect in specific areas. Like Alprazo said, they are nailing people all over for black market collection/sales of sharks right now down here. We just had several people go to prison for it.

I understand you have to have a permit. Ive done checked it out. I love sharks. I think there the one of the coolest animals on earth. I dont plan on doing anything illegal. I like that they got rules on removing marine life alive. But I think fish and game need to stricken there rules on people killing sharks just for there jaws. Im getting off topic but thanks guys for the concerns.
