I have narrowed it down to these 2. I have everything for my set up of my 180 and have a used ASM G4 but I don't care for it. So back to the drawing board for my protein skimmer. I was told by Justin from Avast the CS1 would do just fine for my my 180 plus the 60 gallon sump. I have a Bubble Mag for my 45 cube and it has been very good, but funds are running low and Avast is the cheaper of the 2 but it obviously doesn't mean it's a cheap skimmer. I just want to know thoughts. This is my first big tank.

I just bought the Bubble Mag/Seaside Aquatics 180, and I really like it. It started pulling yuk straight away, and there have been no issues with noise, vibration or efficiency due to fluctuating water levels.

I bought it for a heavily stocked 55 (read messy eaters) w a 20g sump, but I will be using it for a larger (180+) tank eventually. The 55 will become the sump.

I bought mineabout 6 month's ago, and just removed it for its first cleaning which was very easy. I have my BP reactor plumbed directly into the intake and it's working great.

im actually wondering what skimmer i should get for my 180. Going to have some messy eaters in there. I was told i should be looking for something around 400 gallon? Is this true? Only skimmer i know about is Reef Octopus.

Because of the funds factor. I have to go smaller. I usually go larger on the skimmer but when you first start running your 180 it is not going to be at a heavy bioload in a short period of time. So I will use this skimmer for about 3-6 months, sell it and get a larger skimmer rated for a 350-400 gallon system. So if you have the funds I would start out with the larger skimmer. Some skimmers that are good I have experience with is the Bubble Mag and Reef Octo. I also like Avast & RLSS.

How much do you plan on feeding everyday and what is your budget? There are a lot of great options for skimmers out there. You might want to look at the RLSS R8-I, AquaMaxx EM300, SRO 3000 INT (if you can keep it at a shallow depth), Reef Dynamics INS250, or Vertex Alpha 200.

not sure about feeding yet but the budget i would say is around 400- 500. I looked to the R8 and doesn't look to bad for the price. Same with the aquamaxx EM.
