Anyone ever looked at this kit? I looked on their site and basicially it seems that this kit is everything the more expensive "phoenix" they sell except it is non dimmable. I am putting it over a 40 breeder 36" with only a power compact 2x96 watt right now.... I would think that this would be quite an upgrade. If the controller piece is the only difference, as it is DIY I would think I could always add a controller later. Any thoughts guys?

Plenty for a 40B and most likely will need to mount it higher without optics to prevent bleaching. May be able to slowly lower it down.

I have one of the solderless kits and it has worked very well.

Is that really the only difference? The dimming capability? What about the heatsink size? For a 40B 12" 18" or 24"????

If it comes with 36 LEDs I would go with the 24" HS. The HS is almost 9" wide so 9" x 24" would allow for 3 rows of 12 chips and some space in between each chip.

It appears that the phoenix may be a solderless kit? Not 100% sure from the website.

Also, the Phoenix kits come with DAT (drilled and tapped) or "T" slot heatsinks.

I will add that the dimming capability is a big factor but for the money they are asking for the Phoenix, I would buy something like a Vega. You will probably want 2 but I think a Vega would light the majority of a 40B no problem.

Is this going to be a SPS dominant tank?

BTW, have you considered these?

Rapid also has a number of DIY options that may be cheaper. I went with reefledlights.com because they were the only ones that offered solderless kits with DAT heatsinks at the time.
