Decided to upgrade from my 29 biocube to a 40 breeder. I'm going to be using a 20 long for the sump. I'm drilling the tank and using glass-holes 700gph overflow kit.

The tank along with overflow kit

Frame work of the stand

Stand with all the paneling and trim put on with first coat of stain

The stand with the second coat of stain

Stand after its been polyeurethaned and inside painted white

After I put on the back paneling, ileft the top open for the plumbing

All that needs to be done on the stand is the doors and than I'll start putting the sump together and drilling the tank and getting it ready for water.

Still trying to decide what kind of sand to use, I'm leaning towards the Caribsea Seaflor Special Grade Reef Sand. I'm looking to get something that won't blow all over the place from water flow but not big enough that it will turn into a nitrate factory. Im going to be using an ecotech mp10.

Thanks a lot and I've read good things about glass-holes overflows. How do you have your sump setup? Still trying to decide on what size I should make each chamber

Stand looks great. I just setup a 40br myself and used a 29g tall for a sump. I'm pretty happy with how it fits underneath.

Thanks a lot and my plan was to use a 29 tall for the sump, but I was looking for it in my basement and couldn't find it so I'm thinking it might have broke and got tossed.

If you live near a Petco, they are still doing their $/gal sale (til 7/27 I believe) and both 29g and 20g tanks are included. So you might as well grab one soon...

I agree, the stand looks great. I am jealous of everyone who can just put together an actual piece of furniture and have it look professional like that.

I have the same setup with that overflow as well. Been working great and drilling was a breeze.

That's good to know, I already have the 20 long but the $/gallon sale is making me think about getting the 29 gallon. And thanks but I can't take all the credit for the stand my dad helped me a lot. That's good to know about the drilling though because I'm a little nervous about that.

Subbed! Doing the same as you coming from a 29 and 14 BC I'll likely keep all of them for now.

As Soon as I heard about the sale I went out and bought 2 40 gal breeders. I dont really have a use for them at the moment but they make great coral frag tanks. :)

Looks good, gonna follow a long also. I'm going to be doing a 40 breeder setup also. Baby coming soon so my build will take quite a bit longer probably. lol

Debating on a 20L or a 29 for my sump myself. I'll need to buy a new tank so may just go with the 29.

If you have the option, go for the 29g. I have a 20L and wish I did a 29g just so I could have had more room in the return pump section. And also have a bit more space for power outages - I was worried about it but did end up with enough of a safety buffer. But also keep in mind the height of the stand (yours looks like plenty of space) and how high a water level you need for the skimmer.

I've been taking this tank pretty slow too haha figured I'd take my time so I can get everything the way I want it. I think I'm going to head over to Petco tonight and see what the deal is fr the 29 tank.

As of right now I have a 30" Aquatic Life T5ho 4 bulb fixture, but I think I'm going to get the 36" Aquatic Life 6 bulb T5ho fixture, I would like to go LED but I'm so clueless about them and they're pretty expensive.

I'm pretty sure i'm going with the Reefbreeders value fixture (http://reefbreeders.com/bridgelux_value.html) for my 40G. I loved LED's on my last tank. I was going to do a DIY LED but for the cost of the Reefbreeders light i'm not even going to bother. I was told with 120 optics it'll cover a 40G just fine and people have said lots of good things about the fixtures. No bulb replacement, reasonable cost and no heat is a win in my book. =)

Likely he will have the fuge off to the side, having slower flow is better on the fuge.

Yes, the first chamber will be for my skimmer and the third chamber is going to be for my fuge. Like the fishkeeper said im having the fuge on the right so I can adjust the flow and keep it slow.

All looks good, don't forget (and I am sure you won't) that if you are going to keep Cheto in the fugue it needs to tumble. Will be interested to see your sump in work. I like the concept of the fugue on the right, haven't seen that too often.

Tagging along - nice build.

Thank you! And yes I'm going to be keeping chaeto in the fuge, I put a valve on the plumbing that empties into the fuge to control the flow so I can get it to tumble, I'm hoping to be able to add some water in by Sunday or Monday.

I'm in the planning stage of a 40 breeder. A couple questions: how tall did you make your stand? Are you happy with the height? How snug is the sump fit? My blueprints for my stand are essentially the same as yours and while sketchup says a 20 long should fit, its pretty close.

Thanks for catching this I completely looked passed that, this pump was originally set up with the 90 on my first tank I ever used a sump on and wasn't very knowledgable when doing so. I'm gong to have to change this now too. This is why this is nice having people to see the work your doing haha.

I noticed you said you were going to run an MP10...might want to go 2 or a MP40. I run an MP10 on my 37 and it is just not enough. When run on the end at full power, it doesn't even touch the far end. Centered on the back wall and bouncing off the front glass works much better, but, still not nearly enough flow for the entire tank (and I don't even have corals...just fish.) I love the MP10 but alone, it needs to be on a much smaller tank, say 20g or less. Mine worked great on a 6g, lol!

I have a 40B and sump that is set up very similarly! I've changed the setup a little bit (straighten out the return line so the pump isn't all cockeyed in there, added a Reef Octopus NWB-110 skimmer on the right side and took out the rock in the fuge and added a small powerhead that makes the chaeto roll like a ball of green tumbleweed)

EDIT: Skimmer went on the LEFT side, not the right!

Sorry everyone been very busy since I started school again and havent been updated anything. But I finally have a chance and heres how everythings going now. The tank is now up and running. As for the lighting I changed from the 4 bulb aquaticlife t5 fixture and bought a Reefbreeders controllable 24 inch photon. I love the light its very easy to use and produces awesome colors, colors I had never seen on my t5 setup. I transferred everything from my biocube into this tank and purchased two fancy ocellaris clowns and a cleaner shrimp. So now in the tank I have two fancy ocellaris clowns, a cleaner shrimp, two turbo snails, 15 cerith snails, 12 red leg hermits, a frag of orangeish/brown zoas, a frag of eagle eye zoas, a head of duncan, and a small colony of hammer. The light is already showing awesome growth in my corals. I've also started dosing marine snow every few days. Now heres some pics.

Here is the fuge which is now exploding with pods.

All looks good, don't forget (and I am sure you won't) that if you are going to keep Cheto in the fugue it needs to tumble.

I always wondered about that. What does cheato do in the wild? Does it tumble in the wild?

I'm not too sure but my chaeto isn't tumbling and it's still growing a lot.

I'm doing this same build right now with a 40 breeder and a 20 long for the sump. I'm also using the 700gph gl*******s kit. Did you do anything to support the plumbing so the weight of the pvc is not directly on the tank? That is something I haven't worked out yet and is a concern of mine.
