Hey guys my friend gave me 2 metal halide fixtures they are 150 each HQI 20k with ballasts. My question is what is difference in electric use if i use 150w metal halide vs 150w Led fixture. Will led fixure use same electricity as metal halide?

thanks

Less light efficiency for each watt consumed by the MH. LED will generally give you more light for less watts. (Less waste as f.instance heat)

If they are both pulling 150 watts then the electrical usage and heat will be exactly the same. The advantage of the LED is more light with the same wattage but how this translates to the corals may be different. The halides will grow and color the corals with few issues and the LED's may or may not give the results you want. For free, I would run the halides.

Definently just run the freebies. MH are the safest bet to assure coral growth and color, easpecially with the 20k bulbs

I would run the halides, even if they cost more... but they won't. The halides will put out more effective light than a 150W LED will - the LED might put out more light, but more and more are starting to see that some of that light (and wattage) is probably trash. You can use HQI bulbs for 2 years if you get the right ones, which makes HQI pretty cheap as well as effective.

Depends on the fixture. If it's an ebay led fixture, halide. But if it's really a quality one like a Razor, then I would use that.
What is it?
