I just found out my grandmother has an RO unit for her entire house. Is this acceptable to use for the tank?

You really would still want to run it through a DI filter. A lot of harmful pollutants can get past a RO membrane.

Check the TDS of the output water. If it's 0 then it should be fine.

Total Dissolved Solids.
You can get handheld TDS meters at BRS.

Given where you live (southern florida), RO water will likely be just fine for a reef tank. However, you have to ensure that it's functioning correctly and that it's been well maintained. For example, the carbon filters in the pretreatment part of an RO system must be changed on at least an every 3 month interval. Otherwise, chlorine and/or chloramine can get to the RO membrane, which will destroy its integrity.

O_O I don't think they have ever changed the filter.
