Is it possible to paint a pressboard stand with a smooth finish on it already? How does it come out?

I am sure you can sand it a little and paint it.. How it will turn out depends on the paint you choose...

I would see if it has a thin paper coat on it; there is a product they make for preparing pressed board kitchen cabinets to paint; the name escapes me at the moment, but it helps roughen the surface, and helps the new paint to adhere.

Do you mean MDF (medium density fiberboard) when you say press board? Or, do you mean "Masonite"? Then, there is particle board. The three are different. And, as AZBigJohn noted, some similar products have a paper layer on the best finish side.

Particle board is the hardest to get a good finish on, but the others are pretty easy. MDF is extremely easy to paint.

I have had very good luck with two Zinsser products for both MDF and Masonite:
http://www.rustoleum.com/en/product-catalog/consumer-brands/zinsser/interior-wood-finishes/sealcoat-universal-sanding-sealer works very well, dries very fast, and is a universal sealer.
http://www.rustoleum.com/product-catalog/consumer-brands/zinsser/primer-sealers/b-i-n-shellac-base-primer is very good for surfaces to be painted.

Once you prime the surface with one of those products, just a very light sanding will smooth the surface for the finish paint coats.

spray paint, if its not set up already. dries fast and if you're good at it you'll get a great finish
