I have a 40 gallon breeder tank I would like to drill
and make reef ready. I would like to know what
size holes to drill, and where is the best location.
thanks for any help.

I'm planning a 40b as well. 1" drains and 3/4" return/s should be fine. Location is pretty subjective and is also determined by things like your stand. I'm using a basic aqueon stand for mine so I can't drill the bottom center at the back because there's a center brace there. The above Bean overflow is also an option and I might just do two drains/one return in a bottom corner with a black painted back and vertical overflow box since I'm not partial to pipes sticking out of the back of the tank.

I would recommend having at least two drains though. One as a siphon and one as an emergency drain. I would also recommend the plumbing for your return to be slightly above or just under the water level with an anti-siphon so if the power goes out you don't accidentally flood your sump.
