View Full Version : Stocking Plans for a 29 gal tank

So i recently upgraded to a standard 29 gallon tank (from a 20H). Things are still settling in, but I'm starting to think about my future stocking plans.

Currently I have 2 Ocellaris clowns, and 2 skunk cleaners.

My wishlist would be:
YWG/Pistol pair
Banggai Cardinal
Indigo Dottyback

Adding all 3 pushing it too far? Any compatibility issues (other than keeping an eye on bullying from the pair of clowns)?

I think the # of fish is fine, but I'd re-think the dottyback. IME, they can be mean little SOBs - kinda like damsels. A blenny, basslet or dartfish would be more suitable IMO.

From what I've read, the indigo seems to be more well behaved then other dottybacks and I'd add him last just to be on the safe side. Plus I really like the coloration on them.

The dottybacks can get pretty douchey, even the "safe" ones. I think without it you'd still have a pretty decent fish load in there with the 2 clowns and other two fish.

I have that exact same stock in my 40B minus the skunk cleaners. I will say the dottyback tore my CUC up, so be prepaired for that. Now that all my guys are getting bigger im thinking of removing the dottyback just for room i have snowflake clowns and they are getting a little picky about who goes where in the tank!

I would skip the dottyback, I would stop at four small fish in a 29. I tried four and it that even seemed a little crowded to me. Now I have 3 fish which seems ideal.

Yea do be careful on the dottyback though. I considered getting one for mine but LFS said they can get territorial, so I went with a Canary Fang Blenny.

Dottyback is incredibly onery. Consider a royal gramma.

Yes a Royal Gramma is similar but not such a bully.

Thanks everyone. For now I think i'll stick with just adding the cardinal and the YWG. We'll see how that goes for a while then if we do add another we'll consider a royal gamma in place of the dottyback.
