Im using the gray brute cans for my rodi/ saltwater storage, after a few days of being covered, they smell like cat pee. Anyone else have this problem and what have you done about it. These were bought new and are wiped down/ dry inbetween use, if i keep them uncovered its not bad, but dont want dust/ humidity in closet

Time to get rid of the cats.

Yes, mine do too. We don't have cats, and the water still tests fine, so I figure it's something it outgasses? I thought about moving to the food rated ones to see if there is a difference.

ammonia is what gives cat pee its distinctive aroma.

No cat here, using esv salt , but both cans smell fresh and salt after having water in them and lids on a few days, have tested water always fine, just stinks.

I have the same issue. At first I was concerned, but like someone else said the water test came out fine.

BTW I'm using RSCP salt

I just started using a brute recently for saltwater storage. It smelled pretty funky for a while. I still does a little, but not nearly as much. For a while it made the whole room smell mildewy. Now I have stick my nose up to it to catch the smell. Using reef crystals BTW.

Everything I've heard says that they should be tightly covered. I drilled a hole in the lid just big enough to pass the water line through and I keep the lid on tight. This will also prevent evaporation and excess humidity/mold in the room.

Try using a small air pump to aireate it.

Try using a small air pump to aireate it.

this helped me, I drilled a 1/4 hole and stuck an airline in it with an airstone on the other end.

Mine has a smell too. I keep my fresh RODI in it. I quit worrying about it, but I keep it outside under the carport so it is not in my house.
I use an air stone in it all the time.

I also ran into the "locker room" smelling Brute problem. Researched it and found out all I needed to do was put in a strong powerhead to keep the surface tumbling fairly strongly. Smell went away
