I've been doing water changes from my display tank but for some reason I feel that I scare the fish too much :uhoh2:

Is there anyone who doesnt syphon/vacuum their display tank at all? If so how do you keep it detritus free?

I do automated water changes which draw from the sump so that is what I selected in the poll however if I am doing vacuuming which I don't do frequently, then I draw from the display.

I also do my water changes from the sump. Not automated though. Kill the return, drop in a maxijet with a tube attached and pump out 5 gallons, then add 5 gallons of fresh sw , the done. My sand bed is kept clean by my diamond spot goby.

1 goby for 120g is enough?

I don't vacuum my sand bed at all. I have a Diamond Goby, lots of snails, hermits, bristle worms, shrimp, an emerald crab and other critters, plus a lot of flow, so I don't see detritus building up anywhere. I have a lot of rock too, so where it sits, detritus won't build up either. Maybe I'm setting myself up for a future disaster, but seems to be working so far and I've read about others doing the same for years.

Kill the pump, and drain from the sump. Keep the powerheads running in the tank .. fish don't even know it's happening.

I've never cleaned the sand in my DT. That's what the critters are for. IF I do a water change I open the valve on my basement sump where it goes right into the floor drain. I really don't do them that often, doesn't seem to need it.

I used to vacuum my sand every week for about 3 months. Now I just have of sea cucumbers, hermit crabs, and other cucs to do it for me.

My maroon clown comes right up to my hand and wants to hang out while I syphon. I've got a bare bottom so I periodically need to clean up some sediment dust from my rocks
