Getting back into the hobby. I had a 65g softy reef 7 years ago.

I'm setting up an 80g now. And it's time to pick out the sand. Back in the day Southdown, or the HD version, was the thing but from what I have read... That company was sold and the sand is no longer available.

Last time I had a dsb. This time, I think I would like a ssb. Any suggestions on where to go without paying an arm and a leg?

Pool filter sand if you want to go real low budget.

Thanks 4the posts. I have read some bad stuff about silica sand. That it can real mess up fish. Is this true?

Not sure where that last post went, but:

Reef Rocks has a special where you buy 25 lbs of dry rock, and get a 40lb bag of sand for just the cost of shipping (14 bucks). They're also running a special of 50lb dry rock for 85 dollars, and I've heard you get two bags of sand with that 50lb of rock. Good deal if you want to use dry rock.

They're a vendor sponsor here, and the website is www.reefrocks.net if you want to check them out.

I would be worried that that rock is not pores enough. While it does have big holes, it almost looks to dense.
