I have what I presume to be GSP and have had it for well over a year. It opens up but has not taken off like apparently it is supposed to. It is about 4x4 on an isolated rock. A reefer friend was over the other day and told me that there is something very similar to GSP and he thinks that is what I have. He could not remember the name of it. Does anyone know what this could be if indeed it is not GSP? It looks just like it. Thanks for any insight.

Hard to say without pics... what color is the base when the polyps are closed?

Purple mat?

Pics may be a problem. He also said that this similar coral does not run rampant like GSP, if that helps.

briareum, mebbe ? that's the closest 'mimic' to gsp, afaik (no purple mat, though) . briareum can easily grow as fast, however.

perhaps he's referring to daisy polyps, or something similar? those would be a slower grower, at any rate ;)

if you do some image googling for 'clavularia', and 'pachyclavularia' you may find whatever it is you're referring to ;)

Definitely not sympodium. Looks like some form of clavularia, which is GSP. lol. Thanks for your help. Not sure that is what he meant. I'll have to give him a shout later today or tomorrow and ask him more about this.

are the arms smooth, or visibly pinnate (feathery lookin) ?
