I picked up a Reef Octopus protein skimmer for free on Craigslist due to the fact that is has a hole on the bottom. I don't think it looks that bad and should have no problem patching it up. I was told when I picked it up that it was "modified to fit a rio 1100 pump with a needle wheel."

I know what a rio 1100 is and was given a link to this
http://www.amazon.com/Rio-Plus-Needle-Wheel-Impeller/dp/B00CP4TJMO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1379189237&sr=8-1&keywords=rio+plus+1100+needle+wheel+impeller

Anyone have a model number for this skimmer?

How do I set it up? Is it missing any parts? I've only ever run a nano skimmer with air tubes/air pump/airstone... "where does the water go in?, return?" noob style lol

Does it have to go in-sump? Can it be rigged externally?

Is it overkill for a 40 breeder or 33 long?

That is the original design reef octopus, its rather old, and beat up, and in good shape, it would be overkill on a 40 breeder (I think they were rated for around 150-200 gallons if i remember correctly)

for the cost of fixing this one and buying a new pump, Im betting you can find a clean usable used skimmer that will be better suited for your tank.
