So I am preparing to build a 150gal mixed reef with a 30gal sump and need advice on which return pump to use:
1. Hagen/Fluval SP4
2. MSX FX1500 (Laguna/askoll block with custom volute)
Any suggestions or experience with either? I need to make the decision soon.:uhoh3:
Thanks.

I would go with the SP4, you don't really need a custom volute and the parts availability and warranty from Hagen makes it an easy choice.

I have an SP4 on my 150, its throttled back quite a bit. The directions tell you to use flexible hose to dampen the vibration, I used a short piece of spaflex on the intake so its kinda rigid and mine vibrates some.
SP4
It has ceramic shaft and bearing. Laguna pond pump don't have that.

Of the two: SP4
Both are too big. For 150g you only need 450 gph to a max of 750gph. Both of those pumps are rated MUCH higher if you've the usual ~4 foot head and you'll likely end up throttling them.
