I'm looking at adding a 15gal sump (biggest i can fit under stand) to my 46 gal bowfront tank.
Does an overflow box rated 600GPH (either the CPS box from marinedepot or a lifereef) NEED 600 GPH through it to keep working, or would it be good with keeping up with whatever you output is providing? I was planning on a Mag7 (rated ~450 at my head height) and then using a ball valve to throttle the output as needed.

you will be fine, they don't need that "rated" flow.
Many would argue that the "rated" flow is overrated anyway.

I would be careful about clogging up your output/outflow as adding a ball joint may create an area where detritus can build up.

i think the op meant the valve would go on the pump to throttle it if needed.

Exactly, will most likely leave it fully open but don't want to have to re-plumb if the pump is too fast - thanks for the info guys, gonna order the overflow tomorrow and then head to the store to grab the pump.

I just did my leak test with a CPR-CS90. My pump is an Eheim 1260 rated at 635 works great. If your getting the CS90 make sure you get it with the cover. I didn't even know they made a cover till I watched a you-tube video to get rid of the flushing sound. I just ordered a cover off Ebay for 10 bucks.

600 GPH is the max flow.
The only thing you HAVE to have with the overflow boxes is ENOUGH FLOW to constantly remove any air trapped in the tube.
Without it the air will build and eventually slow or stop the flow overfilling the tank.
That is why CPR boxes use an airlifter.
And they fail too so you need to be vigilant with that set up.
I would go Lifereef.
