I think it's a lobster...

I just placed my live rock into the tank and this guy darted out for a second (excuse the fuzzy picture)

If it is a lobster, will he be ok to keep for a reef tank?

It's a bad picture but it almost resembles a skunk cleaner shrimp.

Can you take the rock out and set it in a bucket of salt water? Leave it there a bit and see if it ventures out. Or try and get a clear picture.

i'm trying to get him, he's burrowed under some rock now. The only reason I say lobster is that he has two claws up front...

Could be a pistol shrimp. Try and grab it and put it into a container of tank water for better pics.

The good news is you saw it now, as you are just setting everything up. It's a pain to try and get them once everything is set in place.

if it has two claws and is burrowing I would say pistol shrimp. if you start hearing a click/snap/pop sound it is most likely a pistol shrimp. i have one and i can hear it from across the room. they are very cool. the claw that it uses to make the sound is much larger than the other one.

I agree.. I'm looking at the shape and that claw and the color of the antennas and it is most definitly a pistol

Pistols have one claw larger than the other. They make a loud snapping sound with it to ward off predators and call for mates.

This is what I'm seeing.. Just the body shape in the poor quality photo matchs to this side photo by bluezoo in shape.

I"ve hard some pistols shirimps may get agressive, mainly in small reefs (less than 30 gl).
take care with the rock, they use to dig.

But if it does appear to be a lobster then yea they are ok in a reef tank. Had a purple lobster for years in bottom of our 85 hex. Would rarely see him but it was a treat when we did.

My first though was some kind of shrimp, impossible to tell without a clearer image.

It is indeed a carribean pistol... if you look closely the picture I provide.. it has the same pattern, stripes, and antenna colors as a pistol. It might be hard to tell for those with phones ;)

Also if it was a lobster (which it isn't) it will probably kill alot of your other fish.

Pistols can indeed get a little aggressive in smaller tanks as they will feel more threatened.
