ok thinking of setting my 28 gallon nano . For the second time , since its been sitting empty for 2 years . Finally going to get an led light but wonder which skimmer is best for nano tanks ? I have the larger type skimmers for 100-300 gallons but nothing for the nano other than an old prizm skimmer . What do you guys use?

Does the old prizm work and would it fit? I heard they were decent skimmers. That aside I have an aqua euros nano skimmer seems to do alright but I don't know how it would handle a 28 gallon, hydor slim skims are great but not sure if it would fit. Also I think eshopps has a nice smaller skimmer. A lot of good options now that nano tanks are taking off companies are catering to that. Good luck and happy reefing!

If you've got a sump under that nano you can't beat an SCA 301. Do a search for more info. Less than $100 - shipped - on eBay.

I've got a deltec mce300 for my nano and does a great job. Highly recommended.

I have the JNS WS-1 and I like it a lot. The Aquamaxx hang on back version would be my suggestion. The JNS may or may not fit in the back chambers of your tank.

Personally I never had much luck with any skimmer I tried on my 28g nano cube. I had the best luck with a mini turf scrubber on that particular tank. Here are some pics of the tank and the scrubber to show its effectiveness. Please forgive the crappy cell pics

I made it so it just hung over the back of the tank in the main overflow chamber and shined through the glass.

Wow, let me see if I get this! So for the mini scrubber you used a air stone below an egg crate, with a light. Did you plant the algae or did it grow there by itself? Do you run the lights of the scrubber opposite of the DT lights? Sorry for all the questions?

Yep pretty much except its not egg crate its roughed up knitting mesh. You dont have to plant anything or seed anything the red leds provide thecright spectrum to just start growing the algae. After about 3 -4 weeks i was havesting about a tennis ball sized wad every 7-10 days.

Yeah I want to hear more about kalgra's scrubber build- never seen anything like it.

I personally use the aquamaxx HOB - it takes a little while to configure it properly but its pretty quiet and does a great job. I used ange062's startup (http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1985739) thread as my bible (even though I have a nuvo 38), thats the skimmer he uses. Its a great read from start to finish as you can watch the tank evolve as equipment is added.

I dont want to derail this thread- but I came here today to post about something completely unrelated, and i think the setup kalgra has would fix my problem. If anyone has seen that LED heatsink/waterproof fixture before please PM me. thanks!

Just to clarify, his LED setup isn't in the water it's behind the glass. The principal is to run air over the screen (not eggcrate btw) which has been roughed up good to get a place for algae to take hold and the air speeds growth, along with the LED obviously.

If you search for UAS (upflow algae scrubber) you'll get a bunch of info, they have been doing lots of versions of ATS' lately (waterfall, UAS, now floating) and all are having degrees of success on various tank types.

How much water is your skimmer sitting in, from the water line to the bottom of the pump?

That is a very clever little setup. I may be in the minority but I don't really see the need to run a skimmer on nano tanks. We have a bc29 that has been running for several years without a skimmer. A5 gallon bucket of water every week or two has been all we needed. Just my two cents.

I went that route but life got in the way, missed a week here and there and suddenly I couldn't catch up. A skimmer put me back on course, thankfully.

Tunze 9002 loose magnet version is what I'm going to purchase for my solana 34 gallon when I get the extra cash...

Its got great reviews...I ran a 9002 for a couple of years before getting my SCA 301. I ran them in sequence (one after the other) and side by side as a test. And I was shocked at the at the measly amount of skimmate the 9002 produced next to the 301. I've got photo documentation of that around here somewhere if you need it. Anyway... I'd look long and hard before picking that as a skimmer.

If you search for UAS (upflow algae scrubber) you'll get a bunch of info, they have been doing lots of versions of ATS' lately (waterfall, UAS, now floating) and all are having degrees of success on various tank types. At the risk of going OT, while the OP is evaluating skimmers, an ATS can also be employed - quite successfully - to get an additional level of filtration. As opposed to some of the dogma around here, they are NOT mutually exclusive. I've been running both an ATS and skimmer for years, and my SPS color and PE are evidence that the combination can produce water that they love. Though it will surely be too clean for many corals that prefer dirtier water...

- it appears that the post before this one (not iced98lx's) was deleted or something, as it's no longer visible. But since I can't read it (because it's gone), this thread continues to show up on my "My RC" list of unread threads, showing a post that's no longer here. Looks like a glitch in vBulletin. Bumping should fix that...

If you haven't purchased anything yet, I would highly recommend the Aquamaxx over the 9002. I have experience with both and the Tunze doesn't even hold a candle to the Aquamaxx.

Maybe it was the way I had to place the skimmer in the back chamber so tightly in my JBJ, but there was really no comparison in my setup.
