So I have two 20 gallon high tanks and want to set it up on the cheap. Originally I was just thinking a aquaclear 70 and carbon or hob fuge, but now I'm thinking I might be able to do a sump with my other 20g for a decently cheap price. What would you guys suggest for a budget?

If you do a sump, you can do a small DIY algae turf scrubber.

Used protein skimmer and lr in the sump. You can put dry rock in at a bargain and it will create nice filtration over time.

Anyone have suggestions on a budget skimmer for a 20g that would work up to about 40 in case I upgrade? I would like to buy something used, so if someone could point me to one thats decent priced and effective that would be greatly appreciated.

Look for a Tunze DOC 9002, a CAD Lights PLS-50 Nano or even a PLS-100, Reef Octopus NWB-110 or BH-100.

Check out the SCA-301 on ebay. It should suit your needs for a 20 gallon. It is an in sump model though

Think I can get away with the sca-302? I have a 100 gallon I wouldnt mind eventually getting up and running when I can afford enough rock and some pumps.

I would just get yourself a decent skimmer and call it a day. (in-sump or HOB) Reef Octopus skimmers seem to be pretty popular, along with some of the Eshopps models as well. GL.
