Hi, I've been hanging around here at RC for a little while and recently joined back in May. I've been waiting to pull the trigger on doing this tank, knowing the time, commitment and money it takes to do it right. Even with the tank in the garage right now I even hesitate, but finally have decided to push forward in a slow calculated manner. Months to a year.

As a middle aged geeky type person I have learned the journey sometimes is as much or more fun as the end result. With that said, I really enjoy learning and dissecting every issue. From equipment to live stock. I also love to wheel and deal in the shopping department! And I also tend to ask too many questions.

My Personal History As a kid I always had fresh water tanks at different stages of growing up. (I still haven't grown up btw, ask my wife and kids).
In the 80's when I finally had my own home the tanks returned. I had a nice 125 gallon salt water setup in the wall and ran it for many years with a fair amount of success. Compared to the technology now, it was the stone age. (Hence my Back to the Future thread title) I used under-gravel filters with air pumps, a hanging Superking filter, heater hanging in the corner, dolomite as a substrate. I bought the tank for $119, built the stand with 2x4's and 3/4 plywood. Used a $10 shop light with 4 foot aquarium bulbs. Used dead coral, lava rock which I still have in the basement. So for a couple of hundred dollars I had at the time a very nice tank. Oh and lots of green algae!

Fast forward to today. I'm in a different home, with Wife, 2 crazy Dachshunds and 3 boys with two being grown up. Have one 2 year old Grandson. And now I'm thinking of doing a nice tank in my home office. I was going to wait a few years to put this together as I got closer to retirement...but with the bug...how can I wait 6-7 more years? I find the new equipment options fascinating and expensive. It like being a mad scientist

Oh and if I can sell my piano, I can get an even bigger tank (as per the wife) and put it in my living room. Peninsula? Anyone want to buy a nice grand piano?

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii260/Medicmark737/estonia8.jpg

Today: I'm in the planning stages and buying stuff. I've spent months looking at tank options and then found this gem:

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii260/Medicmark737/atank3.jpg

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii260/Medicmark737/atank.jpg

Its a 7 year old 180 gallon, but never setup. Came with an Ocean Motion 4(which I have since sold) and a new 6 year old pump that has also never been used. If I sell the piano, I'll make the tank a sump or frag tank...lol Here is the pump, I'm selling it. Too powerful for my needs.

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii260/Medicmark737/pump.jpg

Here is an old acyrlic I bought to become my basement sump:
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii260/Medicmark737/sump.jpg
Crazy 2 hour ride on Interstate, my son peed his pants(him in picture)...I did too :)
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii260/Medicmark737/sump9.jpg

Have to setup the baffles, but first need to pick out a skimmer and return pump. Both choices are proving difficult...

My tank vision: I want to make it as if it has a rimless look and feel as possible. I want it to be clean and efficient as well as artsy. I will attempt to have as small environmental impact as possible. Both in equipment and reef life. LED lights (reefbreeders) and DC pumps (maybe), if they can do a proper job in a basement sump. I really don't want my electric going to the moon. I hope to have find a stand or have one built.. I also need to make sure I have no water disasters up stairs. Plan on using a Herbie.

I have concerns about my well water and just bought the BRS 75g plus 5 stage ro/di unit. I have some CO2 issues to work out as well as other setup questions. But that can wait. I will need to bubble my RO water before DI to remove the CO2.

I'm pretty good in the fish department, but totally new in the coral arena. So that should be fun learning.

So this is my initial build thread post to get things started, hope it wasn't too much.

Bought so far:
RO/DI
180g tank
100g sump
heaters
filter socks
salt
27lbs of rock
refractometer
magnet cleaner

Waiting to pull trigger on return pump, skimmer and much more...

Have a ton of questions...

Looks like a lot of fun. By the way I think my dentist has the same corals in his tank. I was telling him the other day that he really needs to upgrade and go with all live. He just laughed at me and said he has a nice set up at home. But this works for his office.

Asked this on another thread, but no feedback. I'll try here, building a basement sump for the 180g. About 11ft of head with 1+" piping using two 45 degree and splitting to two 3/4 returns at the overflow with 2 90's each to get into tank.. I want an internal pump. 5x flow is 900, but I will have only a one inch Herbie with a one inch emergency, so 600 gph at the tank level seems about right...

I really like some of the DC pumps, but there seems to be reliability issues.

I want to keep the electric bill in check as much as possible, and I want a rock solid pump in the reliability department.

My search brought me to this pump:
Sicce Syncra 12 High Flow Pump, 3200gph

I love some opinions or other options...

Gorgeous tank!! I am putting my sump in the basement also. I was going to do an aquarium sump and add baffles, but found a good deal for an oversized used unit. I also have the same corals frm the 80's like you not sure what to do with them.

In my quest to keep my energy bill reasonable, I found this skimmer:

Tunze Master DOC Protein Skimmer 9410.000

It's only 15w and will cost just 1.08 a month to operate. I was leaning toward the BM 180ex, but can't ignore the energy consumption.

Anyone familiar with the Tunze skimmer?

I think I read somewhere last night that the DC 10500 had like a 15 foot head limit to it. Now the output of it at the height I don't know for sure. I will have to look and see if I can find a link to what I was reading.

The product info I read said 17.5 ft, but like you said, no idea what the output will be at 11 feet. 5x flow is 900gph, but anything over 500gph would be fine at the tank.

I'm also considering the Sicce Syncra 12 High Flow Pump, 3200gph, but it uses much more energy.

Thanks for the help...

I've read the Tunze take a couple of weeks to break in, but after that seem pretty good. I've heard great things about the AquaMaxx skimmers also. Its the 15w that really impresses me on the Tunze.

old coral...over 20 years old...any use in today's reef tanks?
They won't stay colourful, pretty and shiny like that once they are in your tank. A natural bio-film will grow over them. Various diatoms, hair and turf algaes will take hold, eventually (if things go well) coraline algaes will cover the lit surfaces, and at all times your fish will be crapping all over them. They will become the same grayish blobs that plainer rocks become in the aquarium.

Bright colourful pieces like these are best left on the shelf to look pretty and collect dust. ;)

My low power consumption quest has led me to this skimmer. In my readings, its a little tricky to dial in, but once it gets going, the consensus is very happy. Cost about $338, using only 15w. At my JCP&L rate of .10 a kilowatt hour, we are talking $1.08 a month to operate. Will probably purchase in December.

Tunze makes a good product, I used a 9011 for a number of trouble free years. You'll probably have to dump the cup daily, since there is no external drain though.

Fish tank crime scene...the small rectangle will be cut out for plumbing to basement sump. Made to match size of vent on left, so if I ever move, I can cover up the hole with another phoney vent. Got that idea from RC.

It's 4"x10" to match the vent size. Should be ok.

If you want to save energy, keep the sump under the tank. That head will kill you as far as power usage.

I don't know if I trust the ratings on the Tunze skimmer, but eh whatever if the options are the Tunze or a Bubble Magus I'd probably go with the Tunze too. Although there are some nice alternatives out there that have power usages in the same ball park. Note you are going to pay a premium due to the Tunze name.

It does look small...

The tank is a 180 and the sump is about 100, but I will only use about 60 of the sump and with displacement I'd guess 135 in the DT. so 160 total.

Do you take in account the displacement?

Otherwise about 240g.

Worst case, I should get a couple of years out of it.

And best of all 15 watts...

Since I like to over skim and displacement is really a tricky thing to account for, I usually base my skimmer purchase on my total water volume. Im sure it will be fine for a while.

I agree, they say once you get these broken, they work really well. I will need to keep an eye on things as the bio-load grows out.

That skimmer will keep up with your tank just fine. It Processes a Ton of water and pulls a lot of air. There won't be a lot of idle time, but it will control nutrients well. Tunze rates their skimmers very realistically. Plus it's quiet and only uses 15 W.

This week on the build:

Orders two food grade 32 gallon Brute cans and lids.
Bought TSP and cleaned basement floor to prep for gray epoxy paint.
Bought a used mag 7 and two green Jager heaters from a guy in selling tons of stuff. Soaking them in vinegar baths.
Hope to meet with a friend this weekend and go over supplies for aquarium stand build.

nice progress, slow and steady gives you time to think and plan out. It will be tricky to find a pump with low power that can give you the 500 gph. The Reef Octopus HY16000 says it can do 1200 gph @ 11 ft head but that's at a cost of 250 watts. same as the Bluelines. I run a SpeedWave DC 10k with no issues so far, it's only been running 6 months though and the Waveline DC 12k was recently released which claims 3170 gph @ 0 ft head and a max height of 19.9 ft @170 watts.

Still working on the RO/DI setup. Have a booster pump (Aquatec 8800) on the way. I think I've spent more money trying to make water than on my 180 gallon tank...

I will need to pump my RO water, after it loses its Co2 by sitting and bubbling back to the booster pump through the DI. Since it will use 1/4 inch tubing , what type pump is generally used for this narrow tubing?

Thanks...

Why is it sitting?

And depending on how far, you could use something simple like an aqualifter.

I have high co2 in my water and it has to sit and bubble to dissipate the co2 before I run it through the DI.

Started to cure some BRS reef saver and figi rock after treating it in vinegar for a week. About 50-60 lbs. Salt water, heater and mag 7. I assume keep it at normal aquarium temps 76-80.

How long do you think this process will take? I will do water changes every few days. Any other helpful hints?

Fish tank crime scene...the small rectangle will be cut out for plumbing to basement sump.

That's pretty funny. I did the exact thing this weekend with my new tank. Added a receptacle and drilled through the hardwood into the basement for the sump.

I also built a workbench with a laminate countertop for the sump and accessories.

So, did you purchase the BRS reef saver rock? I'm on a hunt for the best rock for the dollar at the moment and this stuff looks really good.

What size Brutes are you using? HD and Lowes only seem to carry the 32g size as the Rubbermaid website doesn't list a 50g either.

Thanks for the reply. So I guess I'll just go with the 32 gal too. It's plenty big enough to support a 90 gal tank.

So are you happy with your reef saver rock? Do you have any other threads with more pictures? So far the build up pics in this thread have been awesome.

Thanks. I try to keep the thread up dated with current picks. I'm in a holding pattern right now. A friend and I are building my stand. And I have to wait for warmer weather to buff out scratches on my used sump. Plus I'm wait for my Visa card to roll over. Its really full right now.

I'm cooking the rock as we speak so I really don't want to give you a false opinion of the rock. It does seem really nice thought.

I am now looking at Marco rock and reefer rock since I only have about 50-60lbs right now.

I think the 32g are fine for my 180, so you should be good too. Make sure you get the food grade. Amazon was the best price for me and delivered to my house.

Yes it is...must be 75-100 lbs. He got it free from a friend who was leaving the hobby. Just concerned that it was in his garage for years. I spent an hour just rinsing dust off it. Hope there is no chemical contamination. Its really good looking rock too.

Spent a few hours the last couple of days and buffed out the sump and added the baffles. Due to the inner panel of the tank having a bow, the baffles didn't come out as nice as I would of liked, but should be functional. Will leak test it tomorrow. Had to use Weldon 16 for sure.

I'm working on the plumbing design and parts list for my DT down to my basement sump.

I have some questions,

I plan on going Herbie with full siphon and dry emergency. The central overflow came with two 1 inch bulkheads and two 1/2 return bulkheads. In-regard to the drains is there any advantage of going 1.5 inch pipe before (overflow) 1.5 inch pipe after the bulkheads.

On the return, I was planning of running 1.5 inch (pump use 1.5 inch output), up under the tank and whey it off to two 3/4 inch before and after the 1/2 return bulkhead.

Does the narrow bulkheads defeat the larger pipe?

Should drain gate valve be upstairs under tank or in basement just before sump? Used to dial in flow.

Does this sound reasonable?

Thanks

Yes, it will limit your flow. A lot of the resistance will be deflected back to the pump in the form of back-pressure. There's not a lot you can do with an undersized bulkhead.

You should have both a ball valve and a gate valve, the ball valve should be downstairs and used for emergency OMG shut-off. The gate valve should be upstairs where you can see the changes to the flow that you're trying to dial in... and for emergency OMG shut-down.

Reef addiction and "sense" are mutual oppositions.

Do you think I should use the larger pipe or reduce it to more closely match the bulkheads?

Someone had a link to a pump engineering site that described distances for various horsepower pumps before you enlarge or narrow the pipe. I think it was on pmroger's thread but I'm not sure. Anyways, you're going to have to narrow the pipe at some point unless you can replace the existing bulkhead with a larger one (yes, re-drill the tank BUT ONLY IF THERE'S ROOM for a larger bulkhead). Better to change pipe size closer to the bulkhead than to the pump.

Usually people use the refugium to prefilter some of the water from the display tank, i.e. they are using the nitrates and phosphates to fertilize the algae in the refugium and the detritus to feed the critters kept in there.

I'm looking at my plumbing on my 180g and I might have a problem. The center overflow was pre drilled. It has 4 holes 2 allow one inch drains and 2 allow half inch returns. Since I plan on using the Herbie method. One drain is full siphon (750g) and the other will be a dry emergecncy.

Does this sound doable and good enough. I plan on two MP40s for additional flow. And my 3200g rated pump might be too much.

Any ideas...really dont want to try redrill the tank.

On the drain or return? I can go 1 1/2 inch on the return and then split to the 1/2 returns just before the bulkhead, if that would help.

Have some stupid questions:

I'll be plumbing soon and was wondering the best way to test and get ready for scaping. I prefer to test with fresh water in case of leaks during the test. But will need to remover water in order to scape. Don't want to waste 250 gallons of RO/DI and concerned about high TDS tap water leaving behind Pho food.

Do you guys scape with the tank totally dry or with some water?

During the cycle I plan on going dark for one month, I understand this helps the scape get a beneficial coat of film (bacteria), that reduces algae problems etc. Whats your thoughts?

Any suggestions on plumbing, scaping, cycling I'm listening...I do plan on dry fitting everything first...:)

If you are going to build some rock "sculptures" it's definitely easier to do these outside the tank. Just make sure that you have enough room above your tank to hoist the finished pieces in. They can get pretty hefty.

Try not to fill all the visible space with rockwork. Remember that you need to leave room for corals to grow and fish to swim. Too often people try to build a "finished" reef right at the start by filling in all the spaces where the coral should grow into over the next few years.

I have never heard of doing the dark thing for a month. Algae will grow where it finds food and opportunity whether there is bacteria there or not. Better to concentrate on a clean build from the start so that algae doesn't get to strong a foothold.

Thanks...I'm probably going with a minimal to medium scape to allow for growth. I like the scapes with some open clean bed areas.

I'm going to lay out the rock work on a tarp and then transfer it.

Thanks, besides hiding the wires going down the wall vertically, (with the product you suggested), I also cut pieces to cover the wires going from the light to the wall and used the 90 degree pieces to connect.

What do you think of using the product to cover the hanging cables?

http://i678.photobucket.com/albums/vv145/maldonj1/Tank%20Build/20140511_105125.jpg

The issue is the adhesive it comes with is for a perfect dry room, so after a few weeks it will start to come off the wall, you might need some tiny screws which is why i went with the extra glue.

The gates are slip with unions on each side. I must of tested the valve positions a dozen times...lol.

I'm most nervous about the slip connections into the bulk heads underneath the tank.I just prefer threads in that area.

I have some minor plumbing to add, (should finish that tomorrow) Some final cleaning and I have another 50 lbs of rock coming and will be scaping over the next few days or so. Then the big water test. Do you general use salt water for the test or just fresh ro? I have the live Figi pink sand, so I guess that calls for salt water.

Sonicboom
05/19/2014, 07:49 PM
look at the valves on the gates, there is an O and a C with arrows. Not sure about others but i just went with tap water and scrubbed everything down and ran everything to get all the bit of everything out, then drained it and started the RO and added 1 bucket of salt straight to the tank since it was empty. Just add the "live" sand after the water test.

I've spent the last few hours balancing the system and what a PITA that was...
I also had to fix my dry emergency...thank goodness I tested it...!
Had to raise my return line outflows, I was siphoning too much water back to the sump.
My return pump motor spills some nasty vibration/noise. I did the mouse pad trick and it helped. I also will add 12" of flex ASAP to reduce the vibration more.

Temp and salinity just about there, will add the flex pipe later today (too much vibration/noise) and probably start the cycle very soon. I plan on doing a lights out cycle. I saw a BRS video where they say a dark period on initial start up gives you a bio film on the rock that help prevent algae from attaching to the rock somewhat.

Question...I plan on running GFO and skimmer when cycle starts. Is that the standard why to go?

As my cycle starts I thought I start throwing out some possible residents for the new tank.

I have a green chromis who has been hanging out in my frag tank with his yellow fin damsel friend. He gets first shot of the new tank, the damsel goes in the sump.

After that, it will be QT time for everyone. My only reservation is how do you QT a jaw fish in a BB tank?

Some other possible residents are pajama cardinals, flame angel, eventually a clown pair. Firefish...to name a few. I'm leery about any tangs, they are beautiful, but seem to be disease magnets.

I really want a peaceful tank. I'm going with a less is more approach.

Love to hear some suggestions from you guys.

Sonicboom
05/28/2014, 04:41 PM
All look like good choices. The flame angel might be hit or miss. They can also be a little aggressive if introduced first. The jaw fish will be fine with some pvc.

dave.m
05/28/2014, 05:14 PM
The goby will be fine for a few weeks without a sand bottom. I'd also rethink your tang stance. They are major algae control agents. They can get ick if they are upset or water conditions aren't right but you can use that to your advantage. e.g. canary in the coal mine.

Thanks for the feedback on the fish...keep those suggestions coming!

As I hit the 48 hour mark of the cycle, I ran the obligatory tests:

All Red Sea test kits, but Hanna for the Phosphate...
On many of these, the colors were extremely close. I even borrowed my sons eyes for a second opinion.

Temp 78.2
Salinity 1.025
Ammonia 0.3 this one could of been a .2 or .4...we spit in the middle
Nitrite 0
Nitrate...skipped...figured no nitrite, should be no nitrate in the early stages.
Phosphate 0.07
Ph 8 very close, could be 7.8
kh 9 Also close could be 10

I would take the highest rock off the top of the pile on the right and add it to the far back corner of the left side pile. That would balance out the "skyline" and keep your waterways clear for fish to swim and corals to grow into.

Phosphate: 0.24

Question:

I have 180 lbs of Figi pink in the tank and between the two wp40s and a decent return of at least 1000+gph return, I'm getting some pretty big sand dunes. (3-4) I actually like the way the sand looks, but concerned about the deep spots. As deep as 4-5 inches. I tried aiming the pumps in different directions, but still get the dunes. Pumps are at slow speed too. Should I be concerned about the deep areas?

Thanks

Not really especially once the dust settles.

+1
I would just be worried about a rock falling on bare bottom. Same happened to me with the dunes, I kept adjusting the power heads position and direction and filling in the dune. Now I run 1 wp 40 and two tune 6055's, and return on max pulse with no dunes.

My rock is on the bottom of the tank, I think I'm good there, just cant imagine getting the pumps adjusted to have no dunes. I might have to change those wp40s to 25s...

But if the high dunes don't present a problem, I'm good with that...

Get large grain sand and/or rubble and spread it over the areas that feed the dunes.

Captains Log, day 14 of cycle: Opinions of where I'm at...I still have about 50% of 3 medium shrimp in the tank. After the first two jumbos dissolved.

Temp: 78.8
Salinity 1.024
Ammonia 0.0
Nitrite 1.0
Nitrates 20 could be higher, tough to read...
alk 7
ph 7.6
Phosphate .04 (Small amount of GFO is running)

Switched to else mode on the wp 40s and it seems to have stopped the sand drifts. Only problem is the ramping up and down sound is annoying...

I added the handles to the stand:
