I know canisters are recomended but can it be done? I need the system to be quiet as possible.

Not really sure what you mean. But canisters are actually NOT recommended. Skimmer and live rock or possibly a refugium/sump is all you need.

Buy the best skimmer you can, and with an appropriate bio-filter, you can have a very nice tank.
