It's been a while, but I am finally getting a tank and going to get rolling. It's a 75 gallon which I'm super excited for. My question here, it comes with live rock, though of course I want to set up in good time, can I simply place the live rock in a Bin with saltwater and let it be while I'm setting up? Would that cause a lot of die off or would it happily sit and wait for me to put it in the fresh new tank and water and aragonite?

You can put it in a bin w/saltwater, heater, powerhead for circulation. Make sure it's open top (bacteria need oxygen too). Throw a pinch of flake in there every couple of days to feed the little bacteria too. ;) But any corals attached will die after a week or two with no light.

Thank you. Sounds good. I need to make sure the guy never treated his tank with copper though. Also if he had ich or something would that infest the rock?

If his tank had Ich, it can remain in the rocks/sand for up to 12 weeks. The parasites will eventually starve to death (after 12 weeks) if they don't have a fish host to feed on.
If he ever treated his tank with copper, that's a real problem if you planned on keeping corals/inverts. You would need to give all the rocks an acid wash to remove any leftover copper, IMO. No easy task. :hmm6:

Yes I know but I'm not super worried about the rock. I'm excited for the tank, stand, skimmer, heater and pumps for 250.

Thank you for your always good info by the way. I've been getting to live vicariously through my brothers Cuz they both set tanks up. So I'm very excited to finally be getting mine going.

Good luck to you! Start a tank thread once you get it up & running! Or even before!
