Showtime! :)
This thread contains pictures of my tank taken August 30th (today). The contents of this tank was transferred from an Eclipse 12 tank that I had up for several months. This 20 has been up for a little over a month now I believe. If you are interested in seeing pictures of my tank inhabitants closer, here are some threads you can click on to check them out (I hope this works anyway).

The pictures in this thread will be graphics intensive. I optimized them for size but some of them are still over 100k. If you have a slower connection, this thread may frustrate you. Sorry in advance!
Here are specs and information about the tank. Please PM me if you have any questions. Perhaps someday my tank can be featured here on Nano-Reef.com. I do know that without this site in particular, I would not have been able to keep it going so thanks to everyone who was kind enough to answer my questions along the way. Also thanks to FlyGTI for giving me the inspiration for the 20 long tanks and for selling me your spare20 long for $15. I have lost 3 corals over the last 9 months (2 open brains and a large candy cane coral ... all in all not too bad. I also had an emerald crab die on me ... RIP).

http://instagiber.net/smiliesdotcom/cwm/cwm/eek2.gif That is awesome! That purple ric is out of this world. The colors you have going on in there are just stunning.
How do you feel the refugium & the skimmer work for you? There benefits alone, and together if you will. Meaning do you do less water changes, better nutrient export, etc..? With such a thriving tank I would like to hear these answer to see if they (the fuge & skimmer) are worth implementing.
Thanks & keep up the great work!

Nice to see everything open and looking good. That little hitch hiker sps on the aquacultured pinks is really awesome. It is a greenish teal with baby blue growth tips. You might want to try and seperate it from the rock. It is also fast growing. Definately worth trying to save.

Thank you guys, I appreciate it!
From a fuge and skimmer standpoint, the only benefit I can see immediately is the added water capacity the fuge brings with it to help keep things more stable.
The skimmer does take a lot of bad stuff out of the water (wow the skimmer 'scum' is just beyond nasty but I digress) so I know that's doing its job. The macro I have in the fuge I am sure is helping to keep algae in the display tank under control but to be truthful I have never had an algae problem in the display tank so I can't be completely sure. I do know the fuge is producing an abundance of pods so that should be beneficial. I am pretty confident I would not need to do weekly water changes if I didn't want to but old habits die hard. Better safe than sorry I guess.
I had an Eclipse 12 for several months without a fuge and skimmer and things worked fine. As I moved up to a larger tank I wanted to get a little bit of experience with a fuge and skimmer in anticipation for my large tank (200 gallon) so I went this route. It does give me more to study if nothing else ;).

Best deal on zoos I have ever found gooch. Keep your site a secret so nobody else can get stuff from you ;). The major zoo players don't even have the colors I got from you. I saw that small green piece but not sure how to get that off the rock. Encrusting something or other.
I *will* be ordering from you again!

Looking great! :)
Do you know if the sheet you have in the back of your tank helps towards giving it a more hmm... well see, I have XMs too, but my coloration isn't as nice... is that a blue sheet you have there? And did it add a lot of difference?
Thanks
jdsabin1

I painted the back of the tank using a product from Krylon designed for plastic/glass called 'Fusion'. I was very pleased with the color I selected and the way it looks with any light (as I had 130 watts of PC's prior to my XM's). .
I have tried both blue and black and found that the black just soaked up too much light and didn't give me the nice blend and color that the blue background does. Of course it's a matter of personal preference. Black would certainly be better than no background at all.

There's not much to it actually. It is spray paint and I applied 10-12 coats to the outside before it was filled. The paint is the dark blue fusion by the way (there are two shades of blue). The lights make it appear lighter than it actually is.
Still in all, I couldn't have found a more perfect blue for my taste anyway :).

Jd, I agree with you about the blue paint not soaking up as much of the light. I had a blue background on my Eclipse, but when I transfered the contents tot he minibow, I painted the back of the minibow black. The light just doesn't seem as intense. I like the black background, but now I feel like I need more light. Hehehe! MH perhaps?

Am I wrong in saying that you only have one PH and the return for circulation?

Go MH Caj! hehe...
Yes Scotsman, you'd be wrong. I have the powersweep powerhead, the return on the fuge (from a Rio 400) and I have the AquaClear 150 pushing water in also and that sits slightly off center to the right as you're facing the tank.
Great looking tank.
How is your protein skimmer working out?

Thanks! The cheap little counter current Lee's skimmer works marvelously well actually. Although they claim they can handle larger tanks, I wouldn't dare put it on anything over a 20 or so. They should advertise these skimmers for nano-reefs though because for the small tanks they work exactly as advertised.

What is the green thing on the right of the clam? What lighting does it need? What does it eat?

That is a neon green fungia (plate coral). Medium/high lighting req's and it eats frozen brine shrimp if I want to feed it.

I wasn't sure if I should go ahead and create a new thread or just use this one. I am going to go ahead and post any new pics in this thread and hope that people periodically have a look to see new photos.
Today was a banner day for my corals. For some reason everyone was out in 'full bloom' and very 'fluffy' (as korbin would say). I took some pics of my scolymia to show you what he does throughout the day. When he inflates he really looks cool. Almost like translucent salmon colored gelatin. I also snapped one of my lawnmower blenny 'Louie'. Seems his new favorite place to hang out is close to some zoos. He reminds me of a muppet and it's a good thing he has a lot of character too as the ****head knocked off two SPS's I had glued down today - *&^#%$&*.
I also snapped some of some other zoos I have in the tank that I got from Anthony (aquadesignz.com). Some of them are a neat gunmetal blue. Still looking for some aqua blue zoos. Maybe someday :). I took another picture of my pink/purple zoos too as they seem to be doing well.
I know I've posted my wellsi too but today they were really showing off so I took another picture. I also took one of my green fungia as he was really waving his tentacles around as well.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy the pics....

Looks killer!
One comment (someone may have already asked...), but that tulip anemone looks an aweful lot like a mojano anemone (can't tell the size or scale of it).
If it is, I would do everything I could to get rid of it. Short of a Auriga or Racoon butterflyfish, you'll have a tough time getting rid of them once they take hold.
Regards,
Perry
jdsabin1
09/18/2003, 12:58 PM
Thanks for the heads up Perry. Actually that does resemble a mojano but it isn't. I have had several experienced reef keepers and lfs owners look at it to make a determination. I have had two in my tank for nearly a year now and neither one has reproduced either.
The pink tips tell the difference IMO.

Some more pictures I took this morning. My green fungia is one happy camper. Very bright green and his tentacles are all out and waving around. My maxima clam is also now starting to open and color up quite nicely and so I got a shot of him. Also included is an SPS shot of my fuzzy green montipora and new growth can be seen along with my candy cane coral that is a lot happier now that he is in the shade (although my family is saddended to see him get less exposure in the tank).

jdsabin1
10/03/2003, 09:28 PM
Two of the 14 new corals I put in my tank (SMALL corals of course :)). The first is a stark kelly green large polyp colony of zoos (palythoas). The picture doesn't do them justice and I don't doctor pics so that's as close as I can get right now. I'll mess with my white balance in a few days and see if I can get a closer resemblance of their RL color.
The second pic is porites with xmas tree worms. I have loved these since I saw them in Danano's tank. Truly colorful and fascinating animals. The porites themselves are nothing spectacular to see (brownish tan) but the worms and the porites have a symbiotic relationship and are neat to see in a reef aquarium IMO.

Dennis - The porites are an SPS coral that covers the rocks and the xmas tree worms live inside those rocks. Basically if the porites die, the xmas tree worms will perish also.

Definitely the most inspiring tank I have almost ever seen! Well, make that the most inpsiring tank I've ever seen under 70 Gallons. Your tank is amazing, and not only deserves tank of the month at nanoreefs.com, but here as well. And yes, that's my lawnmower blenny, Louie peeking up behind the zoos, who is now stalking me. He nipped my hand when I was feeding the other day and now I think prefers human flesh over fish food ;).

More pics from me as everything was looking especially happy after the water change.
The first pic is actually polyps that I didn't give much hope to. It was actually a piece of rock that had broken off a chunk of daisy polyps and I just wedged it in between some other zoos and forgot about it. A few months later and these larger polyps poked out. That's the beauty of this hobby .. almost like a grab bag as sometimes you never know what you're going to get.
I also included a pic of one of my favorite mushrooms I got from Blane. It has an undertone of a rich purple color and the colorful zoos around it really seem to frame it well.
Another pic here is one of my 'grapes' that I got from Logical.
Finally, the last pic includes some oranges that I spotted today. Pictures do not do these guys justice. The orange centers are a bright, nearly glowing color. They look to be multiplying quickly too (yay!).
I have a bunch coming from Anthony and Bryan is putting together a custom order for me too. Frankly, I am out of room. Thank God I have that 150 downstairs!
Hope you all have a great holiday season!

Jeff,
I am thinking about starting up a Nano Reef, I have a Nova 35 acrylic tank, and a 110 Oceanic which will be my fish only tank.
It has been about 15 yrs since I had a reef tank. Originally I had a 90 gal Mini Reef tank, wet wet filter Great for that time) filled with Hawaiian Rock (wish I still had). So much has change since then had a all fish tank after (110, 55 and a 42 hex all at the same time), been out of the hobby for about 4/5 yrs and going to dive back in.
I think you have a great Tank. I can only hope I can get half of what you have. I am asking for help ( any one else who can give advise) on setting up my Nova 35. My main question is Heat and Proper Lighting. I have been told that using MH I would need to get a chiller (never had with original system), and that I should also get a Kalk CO2 Reactor to help balance tank (would eliminate dosing and ph problems). How do you control you temperature, reed that the temperature in you tank is about 82 ish, also your thought about dosing. I am also interested in finding out best place and where you bought everything you have in you tank, what do you think it would cost to start from scratch as I am. Any advise or help would be appreciated greatly. If you prefer me to email you direct please let me know how

I swear by Ebo Jager heaters (along with thousands of other folks). They are dependable and work very well. I have one 100 watt Ebo in my Aquafuge so it stays out of my display tank. It is currenty set at approximately 79 degrees. That temp flucuates between 78 to a night time low, to 80.5 or so for a daytime high. I contribute a large part of my tank's health to minimal temp flucuations.
2) Proper Lighting (also your comment about someone saying that with MH you would need a chiller)
What do you want to keep? If you don't plan on having colorful and more delicate SPS's or the colorful clams, then you do not need halides. I've found the Coralife all in one PC fixtures work and look beautiful. If you do want to keep the SPS's and clams, then halides are great. Unless you have them very close to the water, or completely enclosed over the tank, you do not need a chiller. I don't have a chiller at all (although I do have an open top tank). Just make sure you have adequate ventilation with halides.
3) Dosing
I dose B-Ionic (2 parts) versus putting an expensive reactor on a nano-reef. To me that is just not cost effective. B-Ionic is reasonably priced and easy to dose. I also add food stuffs of different types but that is for another discussion.
4) Best places to buy, etc
Do your best to support your LFS first. It's always good to keep local businesses afloat. Aside from that, try to find a club in the area where you can trade or buy frags cheap. It will save you a ton of money. Finally, look at the sponsores here at Reef Central. I have ordered from 75% of them and they all are fantastic.
Also, go check out nano-reef.com. They are a fantastic resource for smaller reef tanks.
I hope that helps! Thanks for the compliments and feel free to shoot me a PM is you have any other questions I can help with.
Be sure and post pics as you go! :)

Thanks guys :). I snapped a quick picture as I walked into the study the other day to show you what it looks like lately. As you can see I have focused on very colorful and varied zoo variants. While doing this I have been getting the basement finished for the new 150 gallon In-Wall tank that is going to go in so my 20 long is very happy and content being in a holding pattern right now. I simply cannot add any more corals or I will be out of room for sure!
Keep nano'ing!

I'll snap some more pics soon with my crapola digital camera.
By the way, your location and occupation sounds fascinating to me. Where is that in Mexico?
Sabin: Im located about 2 hours form the border, just below Arizona, in fact I have a house in Tucson, where I go very other weekend to buy groceries, visit LFS, everything...
The zoos I have in my avatar I got them diving in the Sea of Cortez...
Forgot, my occupation: its a family operated biz With 2 Pig Farms(pain in the butt) 2 Japanese Restaurants, and a big ranch with cattle and lots of desert sheep, mule deer and coues deer...
Wheres my updated full tank shoot?:bounce2:

Right now, aside from some zoos that have grown like weeds, it looks very similar to the pics I posted :).

Jeff-
You might have addressed this already, but I am sure I missed it. :)
Do you support the aquafuge with anything from underneath? I am thinking of getting a 20g long, only glass this time (have used acrylic in the past). I went to the store at was shocked at how thin the glass is. I am doubting the tank would take the weight of the 'fuge.

If I can get my 10g nano to even half that, I would be overjoyed!

No I don't use a thing to support the Aqafuge on my 20 long and haven't had a problem (it's been on it for 8 months or so I think).
Thanks Jaffa :).

That pic of your sun coral on the bottom of page 3 is amazing! I just recently purchased a rock encrusted w/the sun coral and it is nowhere near the extent of fullness of polyps. And amazing tank, I have a 20H that i am in the works of filling out. Great Job!!

Awsome Tank Jeff :D
Glad to see another reefer in the Hawkeye state. I've
been working on gathering necessary items and educating
myself over the past several months. A new AGA 15L will
be ready to launch. I had to practice alot of patience and
convince the wife that another tank was necessary.
Your Nano has been a great inspiration to me, I hope to my new tank can look half as good as yours.
Cheers

Nice tank! I was wondering what direct benifits you noticed when you changed from CF to MH? Did you have your clams before MH's?

This is one fabulous tank which I am sure you know by now with all the comments to date. How do you enjoy it best? I mean do you look at it as you move through the room? Is it in a place you are always in in the house? I was thinking of a 20 long, 30 long or 40 breeder for my next tank. I started with softies in a nano cube, got another one and put hards in there and I am out of space again. I have a beautiful Devils hand which I think is the best I have ever seen but it has grown so large (relatively small for a big tank but big in mine) and I am perplexed but think I will go with a couple of 20s or 30s. I will keep the nanos for species tanks, one for seahorses and the other for ??? some other conversation piece.

Thank you guys :). I take pictures with an old, ancient Canon S10 with no tripod. The camera does let me adjust the white balance fairly well which is critical.
I plan to get a Canon Digital Rebel in a month or so. I was waiting to get that until my 150 was up and running (and had more to take than just some rock and water ;). The 150 is now well on it's way to looking like a reef tank ... sorta.

Great idea. I remember when Jeff started up this tank over at NR. His tank was absolutely gorgeous, and I drooled over his purple rics that I still haven't been able to find.
He took this tank down due to costs of setting up his 150. He has pics of his setup somewhere on this board now, though I forget where.
Just look in his profile and look for his recent posts :)

Hey guys! Hope everyone's nano's are doing great! As Tam said, I no longer have my 20 Long as I finally succumbed to the urge to upgrade. I moved to a 150 In-Wall. With our two kids now fully engaged in sports and other activities, my required work related travel and the periodic family vacations, I wanted something easy to take care of. So far I have been hugely successful. I have some killer corals that I am adding to the 150 this weekend so new pics should be added to the thread next week.
The thread and pictures are here:
http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=579879&perpage=25&pagenumber=1
I have learned a few things moving from a 20 gallon to a 150 gallon:
a) A nano is easier. It's easier to do a water change, it's easier to aquascape, etc.
b) You always want bigger, bigger, BIGGER! I am now planning my 240 gallon. I am hoping I can pull it off before the wife kicks me out of the house when she catches wind of this ;).

Thanks everyone! The 20 long was taken down and replaced with a 150 gallon tank that was built-in in my basement (which my family lovingly refers to as 'The Fish Room'). I am battling with majano anenomes at present but am starting to turn the tide. Ultimately I plan to upgrade to a 250 gallon but still in the planning stages at the moment.
I am contemplating another run at a Nano in my office since I have been doing a bit of checking and the new nano tanks are MUCH more inclusive and better designed than the nano tanks of old. I like the JBJ stuff so that may be in my future. I do have several of the corals that were in my 20 in the 150 alive and well.
Oh I used an old Canon point and shoot digital camera (PowerShot S10) for most of the shots in thsi thread. I have since moved to a Canon DSLR (30D).
Happy reefing!

Sure fire way to whack the anemones is to do the following:
What you need a syringe of some sort or something like it to direct a fine stream of liquid to a target. I used child's liquid oral medicine dosage syringe (get at local drug store). A true syringe with a needle would be ideal but us non-junkies don't have access to that kind fo equipment ; )
Okay then get some Kent Marine liquid calcium and put it in the syringe and then ever so gently get as close as you can and squeeze about 1/2cc of liquid calcium in or near the mouth of the anemone.
They will immediately retract when exposed to the liquid calcium but you will see them MELT after being hit. Repeat the applications as necessary.
Extra calcium is typically a good thing but too much can throw your Ph out of whack so monitor your levels especially if it is a small tank.
Worked great for me, supplemented my calcium levels and whacked the anemones.
If you try it, let me know how it works for you. I have done this in two of my tanks and was completely relieved of nuances anemones until I added more rock (i.e. hidden anemones).
BEWARE!!!, if you have an anemone you want to keep in the tank, keep clear and turn off all powerheads when you do this.
Do not dilute the liquid calcium.

I just want to say that your 20L was one of my original inspirations for getting into reef keeping. I even remember when it was tank of the month on nano-reef, back when they still had an official contest.
