I have been successful in keeping a deresa clam for the last 2 years so I decided to try a blue maxima. My question is can I keep it in the sand or does it have to sit on a rock? If it needs to be on a rock can I place a rock in the sand and place the clam on top? Is there any preventative measures that should be taken before adding it to my display? Any advice would be appreciated.

Maxima clams require much more light than derarsa clams, maximas need to live on a rock as they are rarely found in sand on the reef. They naturally bore into rocks as a juvinile, sand will irritate them.

dodgy, sorry, but maxis are found in both areas, rock and sand, both in the wild and in tanks. croceas are the rock borer clams for sure, but maximas go both ways

Mine like the sand. I had one doing well in the sand when I first got it but I had a place in my rocks for it and when I moved it it died.

thank you all for the post. i ended up getting a flat rock and burying it in the sand where the maxima is.

FWIW, and LttP, I have found that if I try to place a clam up on the rockwork that it always ends up getting dislodged. Sand only for me now!
