Hi,

I am a college student taking a class on the basics of research methods. I need to make a short, simple survey as an assignment. After overthinking it and agonizing over it, one of my classmates suggested I just go with my saltwater hobby. I thought that was a good idea. The survey is really basic, it's an exercise in making questions, and also graphing some of the data that is gathered from those questions. It's not part of a larger research project, but it eventually could be, and I am very interested in this topic.

I hope that you can take a minute and fill it out. Hopefully I didn't make any embarrassing mistakes! Any suggestions for the next version of the survey are welcome and appreciated. Thank you all for your help!

Hi

I have closed the survey for the time being.

Once I had about 200 respondents I started to run some statistical analysis on what I had so far, and realized that I had some major problems in how I coded the information. I spent a bunch of time recoding variables in a statistics program, but I still wasn't going to get much in the way of usable data.

The basic rundown- lots of dudes in the hobby (88% surveyed), mostly "younger" (maybe a bias because of the internet survey), most popular tank size run in the 20-50 gallon range, and mostly reef tanks. The largest group in terms of years in the hobby are the 1-3 range, there is a big drop off in the 3-5 year range (for both men and women), and then it picks up after, so I guess that's where we lose a lot of people. A weird little blip that was a difference between men and women- in terms of number of tanks owned, the largest group for both sexes was one tank. Followed by two tanks, then three. In the case of four or more tanks, that number again dropped for men, but rose for women. It's likely skewed because the female sample size was small. There's more of course, but off the top of my head that's it.

for the purpose of the assignment, I am done, I just had to do a survey, and try to run some basic analysis off it. For most of my assignment I explained what I did wrong or how I could improve it.

As I was working on it, in an effort to make things "easier" I upgraded from the free survey to yearly subscription, so in order to get my hundreds of dollars back on that i will need to do some surveys for real! So stay tuned!

Thank you to everyone that helped, I really really appreciate it.

Your survey sounds pretty close to the industry statistics. The reef tank results are heavily skewed, but that's because you asked a bunch of reef aquarists :)

says the survey is over, or I would have taken it. :( sorry

My research statistics / methods class was two years ago when I was a Senior and it was calc. based...

Consider yourself lucky- I chose adolescent smoking as my DV and
a) parental smoking habits
b) gender
c) race
d) level of education achieved
e) association with other smokers

as my independent variables. 34 or so pages and 11 pages of SPSS graphs. :( ugh

Let me know if you have any questions- I still have a copy of SPSS and can help if you have some questions. It was a pretty good class for me. :P

Thanks,

Colton

What issues were you having with coding? I am currently taking a business analysis class for my MBA and am surveying working individuals. Of course, I have had to code also with a slight learning curve, but I think I have the hang of it.

If you can find time to do it, consider posting the survey questions and respondent results in this thread. Lots of us that missed the opportunity to fill it out would be interested.
