View Full Version : CTARS - Coral Growout Competition!!!
BfishLpond78

Alright boy and girls, it’s time to put your reefing skills to the test, we are hoping for a bi-annual showdown of your coral growing abilities. So whatever your argument or preference…MH over LED’s…or vice versa…two part dosing over calcium reactors…Lets put our corals where our mouths are…have some fun and grow some coral for the ultimate bragging rights!!!
So we decided to setup a friendly competition a coral frag grow out contest. I thought that we should give it a shot, we as club would have to "choose as a group" what type of coral to grow out. Keep in mind I would like to get everyone involved so easier corals like Zoas or other lower light corals for the 1st one and if it goes well then we could try SPS for the next round. I’m really leaning toward zoas as they are easy to get and frag, and it would be a good pilot to this contest.
The contest will be based on a percentage of growth not on total heads. This is due to not everyone may start with the same amount of heads. So for example you start with 1 head and grow 3 that would be a total of 4 heads and a 300% growth. If you start with 3 heads and end with 8 heads that would be a 5 head change and 267% growth. Highest percentage wins half of the pot (prize will be in the form of a gift certificate of winners choice). I believe this will be a lot of fun and some good bragging rights for the winner.
We will run this contest for 5 months; I would like to be started by the January meeting that way corals can be distributed. Please let me know who is interested and their preference of corals to be grown. I will also create an offical competition thread once things get under way!
There must be a few rules of course.
RULES
1. As a group pick a coral for the contest (If someone has a large colony to donate that would be awesome or compensation can be made)
2. A $5.00 buy in. Half of the funds generated will be given to the winner and the other half back to the club. PayPal will be set up.
3. A contest thread will be created to track the progress of each contestant. Each month, members will be asked to submit a photo of the frag to the thread stating how many heads the coral has.
4. We will do a monthly check in to show the progress of your coral. It will happen on the 15th of every month. In order to continue to participate in the competition you must post a picture and provide a polyp count. (there will be a grace period, but i'd like to keep it close to the 15th)
5. I will keep a running chart the shows the date and progress of each competitor with polyp count so we can track our growth
6. At the end on the contest the winner will be asked to do a small write up about what they did to get the best growth.
If I have missed something or there is a question, please feel free to ask it as I know I’m probably leaving a whole bunch of stuff out. Most importantly let’s have a lot of fun and continue to grow captive grown corals!!!

It doesn't have to be zoas, I figured it would be a good way to introduce the contest and would be a way for everyone to get involved. Don't worry, after this one we will prolly do some sticks for ya

I have added a poll to the thread, as stated for the first go around, I think sticking to soft corals will be the best for now. I apologize in advance for those that are not a fan of these, but we will be doing another competition down the road!

As I was reading this I was wondering how it would work for SPS...zoas are definitely the way to go here! I'm all in on something like this for sure. Start our engines at something like 3 polyps...then see where we can take it from there? Or would we be starting at one polyp?

I would really like to start with multiple polyps but it is all depending on what we get to work with. I realize starting with 3 polyps of whatever has a better chance of growing more, but remember its based on % of growth not the number of heads grown.
I'm really happy to see folks interested already.
Depending on which coral is picked will determine some additional rules...(i.e. Zoas, baby heads will count as half, so if you have one adult and one baby, it will count as 1.5)

SPS growth could easily be measured by the mass of the coral itself. start them on a uniform base(frag plug), determine the initial mass of the coral, and weigh at the end to determine %mass increase from start

This is an awesome idea. My only thought was if we start with a different number of polyps, would say three polyps produce faster than one? I may be thinking about it the wrong way and the percentage thing will cover that, sometimes math messes me up. But three polyps or a mini colony will have more mat surface area for new polyps to sprout from, and the polyps will be working together to gather more energy for the colony. It seems like an exponential growth thing rather than a straight line?

Justin,
This thought did come up, we are going to try and make everyone recieve the same amount of coral, if it ends up being zoas, I would like to start with 3 polyps each if possible.

Definitely need to start with the same amount. It usually takes a month for them to start spreading. It took me awhile to get to like 10 but at a certian point I now get a new bh polyp perday. I fragged 2 frags last week for 2 ctar members and you wouldnt even know that I did. Also everyone should start with the same kind preferably from the same colony but not a must. My hornets dragon eyes amd radio active dragon eyes grow crazy. Any of the higher light bigger polyp ones grow fast. Any of the deep water small polyp zoas grow sloooooowww. This is just from my experience but I could be wrong

I dont think they really care to be honest. Its more abosut stability with them. Giving them a solid home to stay in. When I leave frags in the sand bed trying to figure were I wanna keep them they dont grow ever. As soon at they are in there final home they spread like wild fire. I probably should tell everyone all this after the contest but oh well.

Wow, you guys have a lot of members. One little thing we did was get a coral in this case a zoa that the club didn't have. Since we have swaps and trade with one another having a new zoa circulated was our idea. Great start. Our club is down for the "west vs east". Will be watching this thread and see how it turns out. wine country reefers :)

Let me know when your holiday meeting is over and we will get this ball rolling. We have about 25 members interested and I feel if we did the east vs west we would get a lot more interest. Maybe we could make this an annual thing if all goes well.

Great Idea ! I am in. Also you might want to talk with Emery. He has designed a pedestal type reef plug that would be perfect for this application. The surface area is large and it can be moved around the tank easily and if you get amazing growth you can abutt it to another. I am not sure if it is in production however I have seen the proto type and they are nice. Lets maybe buy a batch of them for our contest.

That's what we were thinking Emery, someone had previously mentioned weighing out the SPS before and after to get an idea of the mass that the coral gained rather than size as it would be pretty tought to do. I think it would have to be on a large frag disk too in case it decides to base out first vs growing up. Cause we all know they love to do that first.

We have a scale we used for weighing out food portions. We would set the container or bag at "tar" so it wouldn't count the weight of the bag/container. You could do the same thing with tiles as long as the tiles are uniform.

You could actually just weigh the entire plug or tile with the coral on it. That weight could be used as a tare weight on final weigh in.

+1 this is probably what we would do, we would then mark who got which coral. It would be more labor intensive but it would ensure accuracy.

I didn't see this thread until now but I'd be up for the contest. I would very likely lose but it'd be fun to play!
I have a food scale and a precision balance used in analytical measurements.
I wonder if the difference in frag plug weight (plug to plug) would be greater than the difference in zoa weight. I mean, zoas don't weight much in comparison to plugs so the variability in the weight of the plug could be problematic. We could figure it out pretty quickly though.
Actually I've got a bunch of those oceans wonders plugs. I'll go see how different they are in weight and let you know. Otherwise we might be better off with those clear plastic plugs (as unsightly as they are). I would bet that they have a more consistent weight. I'm not sure if any of this is even an issue...just haven't got a clue how much zoas weigh.
frankyrivera
12/21/2013, 10:42 AM
Maybe whoever is glueing the frags to the plugs can weigh each plug prior to gluing the zoas and run a master sheet numbered with the weight and track the names of the players with the numbers on the master list so when weigh in time comes each plug weight was prerecorded for each individual frag plug
EvilMel
12/21/2013, 10:50 AM
Well, that would be the most scientific way to do it but I don't want to totally spoil the fun.
I'll go weigh those plugs and see how much of a difference there is. Maybe it won't matter.
EvilMel
12/21/2013, 11:04 AM
Ok. I weighed 22 Oceans Wonders plugs and they all came in at either 6 or 7 grams. My kitchen scale doesn't have measurements below one gram though so I don't know if they're all 6.3-6.8 or if the range is more like 5.6-7.4.
I have no idea how much zoas weigh but I don't think we should necessarily worry about it a ton. Doesn't seem to be THAT variable in weight. If people are really worried, then it can bring the fine balance from work and we can measure them that way.
Let's make sure to give Pauly a super light weight one though.
I also weighed two plastic plugs that I've got and they both were 5g but that's not a large enough sample size to matter.

So what type of Zoas are we going to get? I would love to get something unusual but a known fast grower... Anyone know of a good one? Then we gotta decide where we are going to order it from......

Mel, off-topic but what do you do in your lab?
Hi Leslie, sorry I'm days late responding. Lately (last 10 years), I genetically engineered yeast to produce bioluminescence when they detect chemicals that mimic human hormones. Previous to that I studied the movement of transgenic plant genes up the food chain (into bats). Previous to that I studied the way that iron/nutrients affect bacteria and Cyanobacteria/other phytoplankton in marine systems, especially the open ocean.
On topic: do we know about when we are starting this? For how long do we intend to run it? I missed some posts on it probably.

<-- Very interested in that.
Is this still going to happen? Was I supposed to send money somewhere? Is it going to be happening at this next meeting?

Hello Everyone!!!
I hope everyone had a good holiday and a glorious New Year…I know I did!
Hopefully you all have no forgotten about this thread or idea, but it still going to happen. Here are the rest of the details now that we seem to have a good idea on the number of folks who plan on participating according to the poll…WOAH!!!! …39 people!!!
Ok, for those of you who wish to participate, please make a payment to the CTARS pay pal which is membership.ctars@gmail.com I will get a notification and keep a list of who has paid. Please make sure you are member in good standing. If you don’t have a paypal account please message me and I will cover you for now and we can square up at the meeting, but please be certain you are participating.
We will be distributing the frags out at the January meeting. Once corals are distributed I will set up a separate thread so we can have an official thread to track everything and keep our pictures all squared away.
We will be collecting money up January 14th to get the $5.00 into the paypal account or messaging me, that way we have time to get the frags cut and healed before delivery.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mike you should probably make a sticky with the new info on paying etc I'm sure a lot of people might miss this! Just a suggestion.
Can I pay my dues in the same payment? I think its time to re-up.

I was going to have the Mods sticky the actual growout thread, but I don't see any harm and doing this also. Mods if you would please sticky this I would appreciate it.
Yes, I'm pretty sure you can pay both the Dues and the Competition in the same payment.

Lol...I cut all the frags up the other day, they are all on a nice 2 inch round flat growout disk. All frags are more than one polyp...it was very hard for me to get them off the rock so they are ranging in size from 2-5 polyps.
I am waiting on one PM from shayna just to confirm something and I will post the final list for this competition.
SIGN UPS FOR THIS CONTEST ARE CLOSED
I have backed out of this contest since the zoas we orginally were going to go with, we didn't have anough since we had so much participation! So I cut up the Nuclear Deaths I had gotten from Jason Fox at the last CMAC.
I have attached a picture of them.

Lol, it's ok guys. The reason I am backing out is that these are my palys, they grow well for me in my tank it wouldn't be fair as they have already adjusted to my tank parameters. But I have plenty of frags for all who are participating
I may keep a frag just got fun.

I have already made arrangements with Shayna to get her the frag.
