distance above the tank

How far should I hang my light above my tank is there a rule of thumb ?
I have a innovative marine 38 gallon and a reef breeders photon 16 led

high enough so no water splashes on it and leaves salt behind....just so much better than cleaning it all the time.

but it really depends on depth of tank, inhabitants, etc.
