I've had my 72g for about 5 years ... Self contained, except for an external canister fluval filter and HOB protein skimmer. Now considering drilling the back, and adding a sump/refugium.

Would be curious to see what fellow reefers have come up with, along with pros-cons of drilling tank, plumbing, and everything else.

Im interested in this as well cause I picked one up yesterday dirt cheap, but I think a 20L might work

I've got a 72 g bowfront w/a 20 gallon sump. It's got a built-in overflow/durso/ and is drilled through the bottom (3/4 inch). Using a mag 7 return. I've had the system for about 8 years and it works fine.

hey Eric, what brand is yours? Im assuming mines from AllGlass cause I have the "do not drill" sticker on my bottom glass...I know I can drill the back, but how did you get yours drilled through the bottom?

He said it got the 'built-in' overflow/durso ... so I'm assuming he bought it that way... and I've seen them being sold with that option. I just did not have the wisdom (5 years ago) to buy mine with such feature ...

It appears the 72G is not a popular tank ... or is it?

20L would be the best standard tank you can fit I believe
