I just read on another site, that can't be linked here, that Ecotech Marine announced a third generation Radion LED light fixture. The article states that "EcoTech Marine is excited to announce the Radion XR30wG3 and XR30wG3Pro. Generation 3 Radions are available for immediate order."
I didn't see anything up on Ecotech's site yet.

I believe this to be true, ughhh. I just bought some Hydra 52's and now I'm thinking about sending them back and ordering the new pro's. This makes the Radion G3 Pro very competitively priced assuming it will have the reeflink built in.
I think we are a long ways away from reeflink being built in, if it ever can/will be that is. I don't think it makes sense to do so tho since you only need one link to the web, not every radion linked individually. I can only find one website with information and it's not much at that. I am very interested to see some more specific specs on the new LEDs and if there is an upgrade path. I don't think so tho as the fixture looks different. We will see tho when ecotech makes the announcement themselves.

On sale in the US immediately, so expect them in the UK in a week or two.
This is copied from aqua nerd
Here’s a surprise early year release from EcoTech Marine. They just announced the release of the 3rd generation of the wildly popular XR30w and XR30w Pro LED fixtures. The fixtures are available for an immediate release to the public, via your favorite authorized retailer of course, and there are plenty of new features. The big updates come in both form and functionality. The XR30wG3 and XR30wG3Pro will come with an updated look that is sleeker than previous generations, and part of that visual updates is illuminated tactile buttons. In terms of performance, the new generation Radion will now include indigo/UV LEDs that will allow for greater output and a wider spectrum. Adding to that performance, the Radion adopts a full array of Cree XP-G2 and Osram Oslon Square LEDs. And last but definitely not least, the G3 and G3 Pro fixtures are fully integrated with EcoSmart Live!
Beyond the fixture’s aesthetics and performance, the light can be further customized with the use of the new 120 degree wide angle TIR lenses.
The US also gets improved pricing, fingers crossed for the UK

Don't you guys get it? Eco tech is constantly coming out with newer models everytime they have sucess with a new technology.
It's extremely frustrating when you spend TOP dollar for a light fixture and they come out with something better. (and Don't compare this to new cars, lights aren't cars)
Those that have generation ones or pros are left questioning why did we spend all this money when we could have waited for this one to come out.
I personally are going turned off by this approach to business. I'm sure that these lights are going to be spectacular but I wouldn't buy them in fear of a better model coming out later.
Why do you continue to waste money on something that is going to be second best later but you paid top prices this time.
All we do when we purchase there products is promote this way of developement. They are stepping forward and playing with new technology on our dime and on the flip side they're fine tuning their product.
I wouldn't have a problem with that if the price of these lights reflected there journey to creating the better light, but I can't keep buying a product from them and turn around to have then make one beetter on my hard earned dollar.
I'm not opening this up for debate, this is my opinion, I wont defend it. I just wanted to see if anyone see's it this way or am I the only one with my eyes wide open?

LEDs are improving all the time
The way I look at it if gen 1 or 2 or pros are doing the job you require great stick with them if you want to upgrade at least ecotech allow this and don't write off your existing equipment
I for one will be buying one of these as I was going to buy a pro and add my gen 2 to my frag tank anyway

I understand and sympathize with where your coming from as I just upgraded to the PROs in Oct. While I support the R&D of new technology, I think I will just need to limit myself to upgrading every couple of years, unless some really spectacular enhancement is introduced. Hopefully the older technology will continue to be supported.

Every technology manufacturer does this. I don't get why people give Ecotech so much trouble about it. I give them kudos for continuing to innovate and push reef technology to the next level.
And just because there is a newer generation out there, all of the really good things that were said about the previous generations are still true. If you're a tech junky and want to upgrade to the newest equipment every year - go for it! (this hobby is about having fun) - but don't feel like your equipment is useless when the next model comes out.

Entirely agree. I'd rather have new R&D come out all the time than every few years. I much prefer the agile methodology over waterfall.
It's called " The American Way" always bigger and better next month.
By bringing out new models all the time it is a way to drive Income, That what most companies do to drive sales.
It is a real pain as it devalues the equipment.

is there any REAL difference in performance from the original Pro's and the "new" G3? doesn't seem like anything other than the body…… i see the typical talk about "greater output and a wider spectrum." but the Pro's already have UV bulbs and honestly these lights are already OVERKILL with over half the people running their lights at around 50% already so…………. :-/
Meh…..

if your G1 and G2 are getting good growth, then don't worry about it. If you're upset, it's because you want to keep up with the jones constantly. Fast track to going broke.
What is ecotech supposed to do? Shut down research and development and don't come out with new products? they can't sit still and think their company won't go under playing from behind.
these new products are for those who haven't adopted LEDs yet. They are getting a good deal. These lights are awesome.

what Ecotech needs to do is start leasing their lights. that way when new products come out you you trade in you're old lights and then there will be preowned products at a reasonable price.
there you go, win win. those that want to keep up with the jones' will pay ecotech $30 every month for the rest of their lives and others can afford used ecotechs priducts.
I just put three pros over my tank and I'm not upset in the slightest that there are new models out. In fact, I thank ecotech for everything they've done now and before. Mine work great and my corals are happy. How does a new product make my lights less effective? They don't and if they didn't keep improving then how would we have even made it where we are now? Great lights, keep up the good work. Now, if we want to talk about where they should go, I'd love to see a single puck light for my frag tank ;)

I don't own leds yet cause I'm waiting till I upgrade to a bigger tank. I've heard complaints about where the fans are located on the radions. Did they change this with the Gen 3's? How much of an issue is the location of the fans and what about if you plan on installing them in a canopy? What's the recommended height above water?

You get what you can at the time and then you just roll with it. You'll never be able to always have the latest and greatest of anything unless you want to keep spending the money to upgrade.
Ecotech should be commended for pushing the technology further and further and not resting on their laurels.

I don’t think people understand what you’re saying Billabong. I think I get it though. What your doing is basing your thoughts on ecotechs past business trend with their pumps. They only have 1 style of MP10, one style of the 40 and 1 style of the 60. And even though they could improve upon it they haven’t. So if you have the MP60 you have the best pump for that size tank (that’s open for debate as well). If you had a smaller tank then the 40, or 10 is the best pump.
With the radions they continue to roll out better lights on the same platform. If I had a 2x2 tank then any of their lights will accommodate my needs. However if I purchased the gen1 when they first came out and said, “wow this is cutting edge lighting, I’m glad I spent the extra money for it!, My tank is SO happy with me!! You’re welcome little buddies” then I can understand the frustration with spending tons of money and getting second best only a short period of time later, and then 3rd best and so on.
Coupling the trend that you see now with what they were doing, you would expect that the gen1 would still be the best of the best for a 2x2 tank, maybe the gen2 would work for a 2x3, the pro for 3x4 and so on. That would only make sense.
However, looking back it’s not that different, remember that they did the same thing with their pumps. The MP10, 20’s and 40’s weren’t wirelessly controlled,(the 20 is now obsolete). Once they fine tuned the wireless technology, they came out with the “W” model. So what they are doing is no different from what they did in the past.
Quite frankly I look at all these new lights as bells and whistles. I have the gen1’s and don’t buy into the hype of any of the others. You can continue to get bent over their business choices, but if everyone thought like you and I, then they would have flopped on the gen2 and they would have learned from their mistake and you wouldn’t see another light on the same platform. But it seems that once someone like mr. saltwater fish guy (or whatever his name is) and the person of the thread you’re following says, “Don’t get left in the dark ages!! these are great lights, you have to get them!!”. What do we do? We have to get them because that’s how marketing works.
Bill, I wouldn’t expect to change the minds of these readers, the customer loyalty is unwavering. I never understood it myself. (I’m going to cars and I know you said not to) I own 2 luxury vehicles from the same company, do I like them? Heck yeah they are built to last. Would I defend them in a argument over which is better. NOPE, why because, I’m not on their payroll, they aren’t paying me to defend them. And what’s good for me, may not be good for you.

I look at it this way. LEDs are just now coming itno thier heyday if you will. But they are not quite at their peak yet and there is still room for them to evolve. And I believe that's what EcoTech is doing by coming out with new ones.
However I have small problem with the WAY they are doing it and one big problem.
My small problem is the fact that the new lights they come out with aren't really that big of an improvement over the last ones. I have 2- Gen2s and 2- Pros sitting side by side on my tank. And unless you get right under them or you are there for sunrise/sunset THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE!!
My big problem is the fact that they refuse to fix the damned website even tho its over 2 years now!! i mean seriously. Who keeps software in Beta for that long?? The answer NOBODY!!!!
Well i could go on and on But nobodys listening so the heck with it. I hope you guys get my point.
All that being said I'm happy with the what the lights do for my tank. Ya just have to find another way of programming them other than EcoSmart for now.

I agree with you 100%, ecotech should have a better upgrade option for the poor schmucks that bought their products recently(including me lol) instead of paying 300 dlls to upgrade they should do it for 80-100 bucks, sound more reasonable to me, anyways i dont intend to buy or upgrade anytime soon, my fixtures are working fine

Im a big comuter gaming nerd and this is no surprize and is a good thing coming from Eco tech. Technology is alway evolving into something better. That why when I build a gaming computer, I could build it withthe latest and grwatestbut chose the parts that suite my needs, my wallet, and get the job done. If newer tech comes out right after I finished building it. I know that when the time comes there will always be somthing available to upgrade to.

Unless you bought a gen1 Vortech, which was completely changed for gen2. Then they released the wireless model making the old drivers obsolete. Want to use EcoSmart modes? Can't with the original wireless unit ... gotta upgrade again .....
So no, I don't see the point of complaining about a manufacturer releasing new products. It's what companies do. It's how things get better. The speed at which new products come out is tied to how fast they can improve the product or add features that the consumers want. If you want to be a grumpy old curmudgeon feel free to run MH and VHO actinics.

The point that I was trying to make is, ecotech uses their overpriced products to fuel their R&D with our dime. The reason they can continually improve on their product is because we pay for these lights 2-3 times over. I’m only speculating but the proof is there.
Do you think that they offer great customer service out of the kindness of their hearts? No. I’ve had my mp10 malfunction outside of my warranty period and they replaced the faulty pasts for free. Now that’s great customer service. Have you ever really stopped to ask yourself how can they do that? It’s because they charge more for the product than what it is really worth. If I had the choice, I personally would like to pay $95 and take my chances with the pump (and I’m pretty sure they are still making a profit at that price). However they have that MSRP that you can’t stray from for $285.
The Part for my mp10 cost $32 plus S+H (and how much is that overpriced?) So if I paid a reasonable price for their pump I’d still be under half of what I really paid. I’m happy with that. I think, if we knew what it actually cost to make these products we’d be up in arms.
I understand that owning a product from ecotech is more of a status quo. If you proclaim that you own radions and MPs, people look at you in a different fashion. And because of the price a lot of people in the hobby can’t afford it. The product separates us into classes and I think that is why their “loyal customers” come to their defense. That and you’re going to have angry people if the price dropped. What I would like to see is their future products become more affordable for everyone. The company has made it, now it’s time to give back to the hobby!

This is of course how any company pays for R&D. All good companies do this and without it we would be stuck with the same options for ever. Technology moves fast and companies either keep up or get left behind. Just ask blackberry about what happened when they slowed development and let other companies pass them by. Any time you buy the new gadget on the market you are funding R&D. If you don't like that buy the 2 year old version.
I don't own Radions but look at them every time they come out with a new version. I took my chances like you stated and bought cheap pumps when I started out. They of course failed because they were cheap, multiple people told me to spend the money on a better pump. Since trying the mp40 pumps I have had no issues and glad I spent the money. You get what you pay for and it seems that with ecotech you get a lot. The market will always determine if something is overpriced and apparently, for now, these are not.

So there is a difference in opinion here.

Can't believe people are upset about how a private company releases a new product. Apple does the same thing. I by a new phone and the following year apple creates a better version. At least echotech allows people the option to upgrade.
Echotech has a great product but the customer service is twice as good. Can't put a price on that.

Lol Amazing, I was with this guy till he went on a rant about their customer service. Of course a company determined to provide excellent service will try to make money from something else.
No company offers customer service by kindness of heart. They all have that value built in the price of the products they sell.

Not just Amazon but any technology company... Apple, Google, Microsoft, Intel, Samsung and so on. If you're happy with what you have than you have no reason to upgrade. If you don't want to pay full price, pick up a used version or a competitors. I'm an early adopter of bleeding edge technology so I'm ok with paying for that. Not everyone is and for those people there is a different market segment. I for one am happy with fast iteration cycles so please keep it coming.

I'm not opening this up for debate, this is my opinion, I wont defend it. I just wanted to see if anyone see's it this way or am I the only one with my eyes wide open?
Why chasing the latest in Technology? If you are happy with a Radion Pro 6 months ago (it does what you wanted it to do then) then why do you have the need for a later light now?
I got 9 Radions. 4 are G1 and 5 are G2. I am happy with them and just keep them as is. If I think that I get better color with the new G3 Pro, then I will upgrade it later, in 6-8 months when the craze of upgrade is over.
If you don't like it, simple, don't buy it. I used MH for almost 15 years. Ever since LED come out, I think LED is the reef light for the future but did not think it arrived until Radion lights come out. While I cannot afford wholesale upgrade of 9 of my lights to G3 Pro (I am sure it will cost 300+ to up grade), I am likely to upgrade at least some just to see how it is in my tank.

The only problem I have with all of this is I just bought a radion gen2 and a reeflink Christmas week (Christmas present to myself). Had I known I would've waited the 2 and a half weeks to get the gen 3. Come on!!! That's like wanting and saving up for the playstation 3 just to watch the ps 4 come rolling out two weeks later, but Sony did announce they were coming out with a new platform. I didn't hear anything from ecotech, no rumors, no hints, nothing!!!

 This is exactly like the kindle threads I see.
Sorry it's the story of my life too. ;) I've always heard that your computer is outdated the minute you walk out the door. Exaggeration possibly but close to the truth. You can wait forever to have the next thing that's going to be better and have nothing, or buy what you like now and just be happy with it.

You can't fault a company for continuing to make a great product greater. Say want you want, or spin it how you want to, Ecotech makes the best lights and is working on improving them with each release. The G1s, G2s, pros out there, all great lights, and anyone bummed that new ones are out should not get hung up on that. As soon as I got my new Samsung Note2, the Note3 came out. It is what it is. Enjoy the great lights, and more importantly, the amazing support Ecotech provides. This is hands down, the reason to buy Ecotech.
In the end, they are a company trying to make a better product, and they will always need to release an upgraded unit. Enjoy what they are giving us.

Are there any upgrades proposed? It would be nice if they let people go from the g1 to the g3 for like 300, but I think you could probably sell your g1 and spend less to go to the g3.

I just looked at ecotech's site, to upgrade its:
150$ Gen2 to Gen3
250$ Gen2/Pro to Gen3 Pro
275$ Gen1 to Gen3 Pro

I know things get outdated. Technology is always evolving, understandable. It is however unacceptable when I specifically asked if a gen 3 was coming out 3 weeks before hand and was told no because they have their policies of non disclosure on future products.

You obviously don't understand how corporate America has to protect themselves from ambulance chasers. You think if you called Samsung to ask if the next Note is coming in a few weeks they would just tell you?
Come on.. just because Ecotech is really close to us vs a larger company doesn't mean they operate out of a garage anymore. They have processes and they follow them.

How is it a lie? Do you also consider it a lie going to the pentagon and asking for state secrets? They know something you don't, so they have to divulge it to you? You're on the wrong side here and it's becoming quickly obvious.
Ecotech has never done me wrong, and they are a phenomenal company, their following shows it. You can always get your LEDs from China, and make sure to call them, see if they will tell you when the next gen is coming out.

Fine, call apple and see if they will tell you when the new iPhone is coming out and what it will feature? Whatever example can slide in here. Like I said, just because EcoTech is closer to us, participates in forums etc, makes us spoiled sometimes.
They have no duty to tell us before things are officially release. Get over yourself.

So people just show up to a store in lines out the door anxiously waiting for the newest apple product not knowing when it's coming out or are they given a heads up before hand, like a release date? Now I'm not expecting years or even months in advanced notice but weeks or days would not be such a bad thing. I bought an mp10w just because the reef link has an option for their vortech pumps to be controlled through ecosmart live. It's not operational yet but they let us know it was in the works.

I've called kessil before they released the 360 and asked if they were going to be making one controllable from a controller, and they said"we can't say that, but we DO.... listen to our customers..." lots of "hey just wait, the 360 is coming out soon" type of voice. If ecotech knew it would be out in two weeks, they could have said something similar to kessil.

dude, if you bought your LEDs dec1 to now, there's a rebate through ecotech.
i'm surprised you're complaining about this. if i live in long island, i'd be more annoyed with the tax everything you can touch platform.

I'm surprised everyone is still arguing about this. I get that the squeaky wheel gets the grease, and debates like this galvanizes everyone’s position. I know that it helps to voice your concerns to Ecotech through this forum. One would hope that they get the gist of what everyone is trying to say. A company like ecotech didn’t get where they are without understanding what their customers want.
I understand the frustration of them constantly coming out with better versions of the same thing and I get that people feel the need to defend ecotech’s business practices. Regardless of what side of the fence you’re on, you can either support them by purchasing their products or not support them by not purchasing their products.
Nonetheless, I believe that they are fine tuning these lights to mimic what MH produce in coral growth so they can lay the debate of MH’s vs LED’s to rest. More importantly, their vision, whether you think it’s aggressive or not is to lead the market in the best LED light available.
Time will only tell if they come out ahead or not.
