I've been debating drilling my 5+ years old tank. However, unlike all other sizes, the 72g hs a rounded/bow front glass pane. Thus, rather difficult to put on a flat surface, and drill the back. I'm thinking of putting it on a flat surface with some cushions ... but getting complicated.

Have you drilled such size tank? If so, what was your approach?

... and if you have not, of course feel free to provide advice as well.

Now, the idea of course is to put a n in-tank skimmer 'inside' the tank (from BRS) with a Herbie siphon and 1 return at opposite side of tank. Thinking also of suing a 20/29g DIY sump/refugium ...

Any suggestions out there?

I drilled my 72 bow and I just did it outside in the grass. I made a wood template with a regular hole saw and sandwiched the glass between that and another piece of plywood with clamps. I did this to keep the diamond tip hole saw from walking, and to keep the glass slugs from falling and hitting the other side of the tank. I made a box and did a bean animal coast to coast overflow.

Dont drill the bottom its tempered glass.

Thank you. Do you have pics of the final result?

However you decide to drill, just be certain that the tank glass is not tempered glass as tempered will shatter when being drilled.

Yes, I'm only drilling the back glass pane. I know for sure the bottom is tempered (sticker is still on tank's bottom).
