I've had my Kole tang for over two years now. My tank is 80 gallons so I figure its big enough for him though I do have lots of live rock and corals plenty of places to swim through. He still eats normally, bullies the other fish and is always front and center when I approach the tank with food. He seems healthy but has started to swim up and down the side of tank throughout the day especially morning and night until moonlights turn off. he progressively started doing this more and more and less normal habits of cleaning the rocks. Can anyone tell me why he is doing this behavior and what I can do to help him?

I have a coral beauty that does it every once in a while. I think it may be just a show of aggression on his part.

I think its more of a sign of boredom than aggression.
Mine does figure 8s on the right end of the tank every now and then. He does it a lot less since I put a jebao power head in. Tangs like a lot of current. Both of my tangs really like the crazy turbulence.

He's still using the side of my tank as a race track driving me nuts maybe I should wave some checkered flags or something!!

Up and down the front of a tank is a symptom of keeping a fish in a tank that is not long enough. And yes, some tangs like flow.

My 2 spot will go up in front of my Korilia and just race in the current. It's rather entertaining.
What's flow like in your tank? You might need to add some flow to that area to give it something to swim against.

My tank is a 4 foot 80 gallon and the kole tang is maybe 4" across. I do have lots of live rock but he swims through all the rockwork and there's lots of flow.

Sounds neurotic to me.

How long has this been going on? Does he have a another fish to school with? I know my 75 is a bit small for a yellow tang but I introduced both my yellow tang and blue eyed tang at the same time in hopes of them becoming friends. So far they pall around the tank and keep each other company.
In the wild tangs stay in large groups and are always on the move. I noticed with my previous kole tang that was in my 55 that it was always a bit neurotic, always on its guard and never really mellowed out. I took notice of a lot of the larger systems on here that tangs of all types seem to take down there guard and seem a lot more happy when there are other tangs to swim with. That seems to be working for me so far. So maybe he is lonely.

I think fish see their reflections in the glass at different times of the depending on ambient light, and display weird behaviors. Well, what we think is weird. Check water parameters and make sure nothing is amiss.

My KT just started doing what is described above. Had hi a long time and my tank is 120 g's and otherwise healthy. I'm worried. Whatever happened to yours?

He eventually snapped out of it returned back to normal.
