Hey guys,
i'm wondering to purchase a new external pump.
Can someone give me some tips?
What's the best external pump for reefs?
Tks
By the way, i've purchased an EHEIM COMPACT 5000 for external use and, for my surprise and disappointing, when i set it up, it's began to leak !!! :angryfire:
i've heard that EHEIM pumps were one of the best pumps in the market. I don't think so anymore!

the compact series of Eheim are the lower end, IMO. the traditional 12XX series are more robust in design much heaver. you can try one of the newer DC pumps, although unproven at this point as far as reliability. how much water are you looking for, range wise?
im assuming around 900 GPH
im trying out a Jebao DC6000 right now. a few months running, no problems so far.
116 USD shipped.
bueno suerte with your search.

I've tried out a couple different pumps as the return and was looking for quiet external pump that can deliver about 700-800gph from at least 4 meter of head and didn't want the pump to have a large footprint itself. That narrows things down pretty quickly, the iwaki's are great for head pressures and size but anything larger than the 20's is a bit too loud for living spaces(I had the pump plumbed to flex tube and free resting on thick neoprene pad, not mounted). I tried the waveline dc10000II, it was pleasantly quiet but not enough flow for my needs under the head pressure, for $250 though, it's gotta be the best deal going for the features(quiet, external, wide variable flow range). I've also been using a DC4000 for media reactors for several months and it is very quiet and so far reliable. I did more research on pumps and ended up making an investment..got an Abyzz A200, it delivers on all features and is a pressure enabled pump which can deliver flow at higher head pressures beyond 5 meters, very small pump body footprint, and it comes with a 10 year warranty(requires 240VAC input).

i need something like 1000 - 1200 gph. Size is also an issue here. The EHEIM 5000 fits very well here, but.....!!!!:furious:
You know the dimensions of the EHEIM 1262?

im afraid the 1262 is much much bigger. you might want to relook at your space arrangements, see if there's a solution to pick up some more room, or go internal.

Internal is my problem! I´m going external because my internal pumps are heating too much the water.
Became external may be the solution.

you might want to look at the jebao/diablo/waveline lineup of DC pumps.
although unproven at this point for longevity (just havent been out long enough), they do run cooler than a standard AC pump by 50%.
im keeping my eheim plumbed up and on standby, just in case something happens, i can change it out in minutes.

ok tks a lot. i'll take a look on those. Just a question, what's the difference between DC and AC pumps?

to me the meaningful difference is that DC pumps come with 3 times the equipment that an AC pump does, a DC pump will have(1) an external AC/DC adapter which you plug into your standard electrical outlet, (2) variable power level controller, (3) the pump, then you'll have a cable that goes between the adapter and controller and another cable between the controller and pump, so it's more stuff. The positive though is that the pump itself tends to be pretty lean on external dimensions. I'd stay away from the Diablo for external usage, it is not officially supported. I got the DC 10500, because I saw some other guy claiming to be an expert posting that it was ok. It's not, and the directions that came with the pump clearly state that it should only be submersed. I tried it anyway, and learned the hard way, it does not work externally, it leaked from the seal between the volute and pump body. If you're going external, avoid it. This article gives some good comparisons of DC pumps on market and their history http://************.com/2013/06/10/dc-pumps/

I guess I don't understand the url policy on posts, it's mangling the url in my comment, it's on reef builders, just google 'aquarium dc pumps' it'll be the 5th or 6th link down.

Tks sreuland, i didn't found either on youtube a video with DC pumps working externally. I found the link i'd post. I'll take a look. Thanks a lot again.
