hello,
i am building a 75g dt with a 20g sump. i am building an algae scrubber in the sump area.
i was wondering if it is still possible to keep a thriving population of copepods and amphipods in the sump even with the ats?
i have read that in some systems with an ats, the chaeto dies off. i am going to try having chaeto, but just in case.
is it possible to have pods thriving without chaeto? maybe with rock rubble or another material?
thoughts?
thanks!

sure. They will hide where ever they can.

Pods just need a "refuge" from serious preydation, and they don't need macros to get along nor is the scrubber an issue.

Yes, in fact I get a ton of pods growing on my ATS

My experience here is mixed. When I first added a scrubber to my tank, my chaeto did die off - though it wasn't growing with much vigor prior to the ATS. Then, all of a sudden, about a month ago, from a few forlorn strands it started to grow like gangbusters. Water quality parameters haven't changed, but something clearly did, I'm just not sure what. I have increased the fish load, so perhaps there are now enough excess nutrients to fuel the chaeto, dunno. anyhow, point is that it is well worth attempting chaeto.

Thanks for the feedback.

Where are the pods growing on your ats? On the algae that gets scraped away? If so, don't you lose a lot of them?

Gotcha... I will try the ats and chaeto. Maybe I will have a happy medium.
