View Full Version : Have you found the perfect grade sand?

I currently have Fiji Pink in my tank. It's beautiful but also relatively small grains, and is blown around easily by my powerheads. I need the flow to prevent cyano, grow my SPS, etc. I'm sure many have faced the same issue.

I'd like to get a different grade sand but am having trouble finding anything that's somewhere in size between Fiji Pink and Crushed Coral.

The Crushed Coral is the practical and best choice, but I just am not a huge fan of how it looks.

Anyone know of sand I can get online that is somewhere between Fiji Pink and Crushed coral in size?

Anyone have experience with Crushed Coral and wants to share positives and negatives?

Thanks

Thanks guys!

Yeah all I use as well. Great substrate for a reef.

This is what I use. It still gets pushed around a little by my one WP40 in my 105G but not near as bad as other sands would.

I really like the look of sugar fine arragonite. Sure, it blows around a bit at first, but the flow in your tank will cause it to end up where it, at least IMO, looks more natural than an evenly groomed sand trap. We're not on a golf course! Let it go where it will and be happy! Besides - my Orange Spot and YW gobies love it!

Personally i like aragalive special blend i believe its called, harder to blow it around with the pumps.

Have you been diving? Where I have been the sand is closer to the "special grade" size wise and it is pretty much flat as far as the eye can see.

I like the look of the sugar fine as well (I run BB though).

After just having used the Fiji Pink sand, which is relatively fine, and now switching to the special grade I have to say I actually like the look of the special grade better. Since the granules are larger it actually gives the sandbed some texture instead of the blanket white look of the smaller granule sand.

Of course there's the benefits too of it not being blown around by powerheads etc.

I think it's a matter of personal preference though as far as the look of your tank, I've seen equally beautiful tanks using both sizes of sand

Just downgraded from a 75 to a 40 breeder. The sand finally settled this morning. Here's some pics. Will be making a thread for the tank rebuild soon.

It's a sumpless tank because the glass is tempered and I also can't risk a flood...wish I didnt have to have all that equipment in the tank but o well...still a little piece of the ocean in my living room so I can't complain
