I have a 20 gallon that has been set up for almost 10 years, with no fish or inverts and just a few softies. I'm considering a peacock mantis, but I'm not willing to put any live food in the tanks. It would only be frozen food.
Can this be done? Is this a completely dumb idea? Unfair to the mantis? Let me know your thoughts, please. And be nice!

Yes it can be done. I had a peacock for 3 years and 99% of the diet was from the seafood department at the grocery store. I sometimes fed it by hand and sometimes I used a bamboo skewer to enrich the mantis so it could hunt and "smash" the prey.
If I worked in the tank I made sure I knew where the mantis was so it would not shake my hand.
It is important to provide enough shelter and darken areas. Mine would move back and forth.
Really an interesting animal and it is too bad they cost double from a few years ago.

Excellent advice from KafudaFish. They are fascinating animals and pretty smart.

Keep in mind that peacocks get rather large, and require a pitch black burrow. There are a number of smaller species that deal with light better that you might want to consider.
