I was at petco today. I was actually super surprised to see how clean and healthy most things looked. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/01/19/uhabyza6.jpghttp://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/01/19/u8ubuzyh.jpghttp://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/01/19/gy9e6ara.jpghttp://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/01/19/udesere7.jpg

Mine is actually quite nice frag tank wise, alot of their fish have ich though so I won't be buying fish there.

I have to admit if I was in Petco and it had a frag tank like that, I would take a look.

I know, I had just picked a dog crate up and went to the saltwater section and saw that and I was going to my LFS to get some corals after that. I was like hmmm... But I didn't get any from petco.

With petcos prices if they hired people that some what knew what they were doing they could make so much more money. My petco seems to be cleaning up there saltwater better than before but I still wouldnt buy a tang from them or anything expensive. I always wondered why there fresh water always look super clean but salt looks like crap. Cleaning a tank is the same in salt amd fresh

I don't know, but this guy who ran this section said he'd been doing salt water reef tanks for awhile and it shows.

I have 2 Petcos near me. One is horable the other is immaculate. I asked at the fish department guy at the nice one about the bad one and they don't understand it. They are in the same district and there store is always "inspected" and they don't know how the other manager still has a job.

I should add that I have a very happy healthy yellow tang from the nice store.

Where in NC are you located? I've been to two petcos in the raleigh area and neither had saltwater fish or coral.

I have been seeing a change in the Petco's around here as well. In fact, I have bought a few corals and fish from them in recent months. All healthy and priced well. I am hoping that they continue this upward trend.

I think it all depends upon who is running the local Petco fish department. We have one Petco in the area that was so bad with saltwater tanks they got completely out. Another one is pretty decent and the 3rd one has gone back and forth between good and not so good as the manager of the fish department has changed. Currently it is really quite good and the guy running the fish department is very knowledgeable. We just had him special order some frags in for us and I am very impressed with the size, coloration and overall health of them.

Petco Bakersfield has made big improvements.

Our local petco it in pretty good shape as far as petcos go. After talking to the fish manager, he knows what needs to be done to go to the next level but he is held back by corporate policy.

He knows tangs are a problem but he's not allowed to select his stock list. They have two independant systems each with 9 display tanks. When I asked why he doesn't keep the tangs in one system with copper and keep the inverts in another. His response was that petco has a no chemicals policy.

He knows his lighting is insufficient for coral. He isn't allowed to upgrade them. I even suggested that next time a fixture is returned due to some sort of cosmetic damage he should just put it on one tank. Unfortunately that's also against policy. They have to take all returnes that aren't in resale condition and dispose of them. Part of their anti theft policy or some nonsense like that.

I give him props for doing as well as he is with what he's allowed to work with.

Petco is usually bad. They have unhealthy fish and tend to soak tanks in copper, or so I've heard. However the frag tank does look good but if I were you when buying from somewhere like Petco, I'd stick to SPS and soft corals

The Petco near me is also very clean. I bought 2 Banghai Cardinals and a Kole Tang and all are healthy and doing well. Although they don't have much by way of corals.

It all depends on who is running the show..

^6 petco policy actually doesn't allow the use of copper. one of the reasons I eventually quit. they don't allow the use of any medicines that are actually effective.

It depends on who's working one petco by me had good quality until the person taking care of the fish said she was moving and ever since then the tanks are full of algae and poor quality fish. It ultimately depends on the person taking care of the fish.

This is how it is by me. I bought a pistol/goby pair and a green digi frag from the good one near my house.

I thought that looked like the one in Wilmington nc! I work there and actually got my first fish there. The ones around charlotte are not in good shape. But this one is well kept and they have a guy there that is very knowledgable.

the guy from my petco told me what day to order any fish I would like and he would get them to my hands before it got into the stores water supply .. I thought that was nice of him..

The petco here in Rochester just had a huge remodel done to it and the saltwater section is huge now. No fish or corals yet in the tanks, but the set up looks like it has a lot of potential.

Each Petco varies depending on the managers and workers there...it's just that Petco usually doesn't keep the good ones since they can't pay well

I wouldn't buy a bag of sand at my Petco in Tampa. Last time I was there they had new marine fish in bags floating, I was there for 45 minutes with my kids. No one checked up on them. Poor little fish.

What I've been told by the guys in the aquatics department at the ones by me is they get to upgrade and expand the saltwater section based on the volume they do in saltwater. The baseline seems to be two banks of saltwater tanks, then it goes to three, and then a frag system as volume goes up. On the other hand, they can drop to one bank and then no salt if they don't do the volume.

Our petco is about to unveil the all new fish section. They redid all tanks and have expanded the SW section. Looks really nice. They have always had good selections and has a new order every Friday at the same time.

Stopped by the one near me tonight to pick up some aquarium silicone and decided to check out the saltwater section. Other than seeing the brightest orange clown I've ever seen, I was disappointed with what I saw next. GHA all over the LR, a clown with half of a bottom jaw, another clown with disease, GBTA that has been dead and deteriorating for days, a turbo snail left on its back, and a carpet nem with its footing in the air. The manager came over and I brought it to his attention. The guy says, "well there's not much I can do for the clown. This guy(the carpet nem) we just got in today and hasn't stuck to anything yet" and proceeds to grab the carpet and literally press it onto a rock. I thought he was gonna shove his thumb right through the mouth!!

Wow. What you described is probably an aquarist's worst dream come true. That's horrible.

each store is different depending on the person in charge of the tanks. my store is ok, i bought a cleaner shrimp from them who didn't look great, but in my tank he perked up

the store looks better then some of the lfs and local pet stores in the area
