My son and I are making a couple tank decisions that we need help with. Our end goal is to have two tanks. One tank will be for our 2 large oscars. The second tank will be a reef tank with some small to medium saltwater species.

We currently have the 2 oscars in a 55g that they have outgrown.
We also just picked up a used Oceanic 120g (24" x 24" x 48") on Craiglist with an extra eheim 2217.

I know we will need another tank as the 55g is not suitable for the Oscars and is not deep enough (front to back) for the reef.

Now the question:

Get a new tank for the Oscars and save the 120 for salt?
Put the Oscars in the 120 with both eheims & buy a different tank for the salt?

We still have a few months of studying to do on the salt.

Eventually the salt & fresh will be next to each other so it would be nice if the new tank is 24" front to back, like the 120g.

Maybe the 120 for the Oscars and something like a 24" x 20" x 60" for reef.

Any input is appreciated.

120 is probably the most common tank you will find in reef world, cant comment on oscars as most everyone here is into saltwater.
120 is not a bad size to have in reef setup with corals and rocks plus few small to medium size fish.
Do read through the stickies for equipment and requirements of species.
Good luck
